Strangely, video ignores the 700 Thespiae who fought and died alongside Spartans. Likewise, Xerxes troops retreated from Greece a year after Salamis naval battle, when they were defeated , mostly because of Spartans, at Plataea.

A cause for a certain historic event cant be really known tho. It is just a speculation, based on confirmation bias. Real life is much more messed up, to assign cause effect make it easier to remember or understand, as it giving us an illusion of order.

Heck, history is literally a pseudoscience and untested. See, with natural science we can deduce causal relation with repeated experiment/ observation. History by definition cant be tested by experiment.

It would be weird, unnerving, yet very funny if literally everything Herodotus said was true.

It’s actually Thucydides. Historians don’t like to claim Herodotus since he doesn’t actually use anything resembling historical analysis, and he also lied a great deal throughout his works. his works also read more like myths and philosophies than histories.

Not history more like journalism or simply research. Perhaps father of scholarship. History had been documented outside of greek world for thousands of years before him that doesnt involve religious fairy tales

Herodotus was not the first historian or even Greek historian - that title goes to Hecataeus of Miletus (550 BCE - 476 BCE). He was also a geographer and improved on the map of Anaximander (610 BCE - 546 BCE) who also lived in Miletus, the first writer to mention the Greco-Persian Wars and the first writer to mention the Celtic and Illyrian peoples. He did trust Homer (8th century BCE) as a genuine historical source though.

My fathers side of my family is from Bodrum, Turkey, which is modern day Halicarnassus or Halikarnas in Turkish. I was raised in New Zealand, which is a very new country and has very limited history. It makes me brim with pride knowing that my ancestors have a rich and long spanning history that I am able to learn about today because of great men like Herodotus.
