Technically Michelle Yeoh's character has committed a mahjong faux pas by taking the discarded tile and placing into her row before showing her winning hand. For serious mahjong players this disqualifies your winning hand. Or maybe that's also part of the symbolism here.

Such an American movie..."What about his happiness?" Today's generation doesn't understand duty, responsibility, and dedication to family supersede "happiness". Besides, happiness is fleeting by eating a bad meal, or because you didn't get enough sleep. That is a terrible metric to gauge your life.

The line where Rachel says, “a poor, raised by a single mother, low class immigrant nobody" is a double edged statement that could indicate that Rachel has heard these words thrown at her by racist bullies in America...as well as being rejection by her "own kind" in an Asain country...

My gf loves this film, and I right away recognized Michelle Yeoh! "That's his mom!?", I said when she first showed me! I right away let her know that Constances' character should be afraid of her!!!

It's refreshing to know that God's love does not look down on others, nor step on people to feel powerful, that is the mindset of toxicity and satan. The fruits of the spirit and those that carry it, show it and express it delightfully are truly wealthy indeed ❤❤ God bless all ❤️🌍

"So you choose for him" is Michelle Yeoh's last line in the film but she conveys so much with her facials in the rest of her scenes. Such a good actor.

This scene inspired me to take up mahjong, I’m still horrible at it but it sure is good fun. And it finally allowed me to note down all the connotations that were hidden in this scene

what an unfilial son

this was such a bad movie. people only liked it because it was by asians. In the real world the mother would never let this happen. Also her son looks like a 20 year old model and constance looks like a 40 year old soccer mom.

Plot twist, Rachel is a gold digger and didn't want the son without the money, so she turned him down and then used reverse psychology on the mom as a last attempt to get the son and the money! LOL

Rachel’s mom’s stare scene is so powerful as it shows how her mom gave a sad and pitying look other than hatred. Eleanor must have felt like being slapped by that stare.. Mahjong scene is one of the best soft revenge scene ever made.

Yeow’s character has a point - happiness is an illusion.

This is a very good scene.

I believe I saw that they exchanged a slight nod at the end of the scene, and Eleanor started it first, which means she began to grow some respect for Rachel and her mom whom she before this scene, had always looked down on. I have never watched this movie but guess this would be the turning point of the story.

To the moms out there, your net-worth lays within the children you raised, not the money you accumulated. In this clip, Rachel's mom knows that she is as rich as Nick's mom and it is even more impressive when she raised Rachel to such a wonderful character as a single mom, with limited resource.

I thought, hands down, this was the best scene in the full movie

That mom in the orange is like a lioness just staring down its prey in the long grass. The look of my cub just kicked your ass and if you try anything besides the hurt you have caused I will devour you. Stay seated and know your place.

Shout out to Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z for actively trying to break toxic family cycles. And a huge shout out the some of the ones before us that did despite societal and sometimes by law pressures. Thanks for showing us courage.

The chinese build stuff to last? Most south asian cultures are patriarchal, twisted and fucked up. So im not sure such a rhing can even be said. The only thing they create is oligarchies

too be honest, Rachel came in just as judgemental towards Eleanor . When Nick and Rachel was driving back from the dinner at the family mansion, it was rude of Rachel to insinuate that Eleanor wasn't an attentive mother towards Nick, they just have different ways of life and Nick still had a good family structure around him. Eleanor opinion of Rachel was spot on the money, saying Rachel wouldn't understand there traditional customs for the greater benefit of the family, Because of this, it later caused a rift between Eleanor and Nick relationship, which is what Eleanor was probably afraid of. Approaching your potential future mother in law in that way is not ideal. The fact that Rachel can sit there and act like a victim is beyond me.

I sincerely feel the full release or climax of this movie's tension is with her mother's final look to Eleanor, and that music. It makes me cry.
