The Mahjong scene from Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

EXPLANATION:
This scene is the climax of the movie, where Rachel (Constance Wu) squares off against Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) over Nick (Henry Golding). The rules of Mahjong are similar to Poker and "Go Fish" where a player tries to make a winning hand from drawing a tile or consuming someone else's discard tile. The loser (the one who pays money) is the person who discards the winning tile to the winner.

In this scene, Eleanor explains that she does not approve of Rachel because as an American, Rachel can only think about herself and not about family. Rachel then reveals that she turned down Nick's proposal and offer to walk away from his family, to which Eleanor responds, "Only a fool folds a winning hand." But Rachel responds that she did this because it would tear him away from his mother and ultimately make him sad. As she does this, she draws the winning tile for her hand, but also knows that it is the tile Eleanor needs to win. She discards her tile to which Eleanor takes to win. Then Rachel reveals her tiles to show that she did in fact, fold the winning hand, showing Eleanor that when she looks back years from now, she'll know that she only has the winning hand (Nick) because Rachel made the sacrifice to give him up.

Technically Michelle Yeoh's character has committed a mahjong faux pas by taking the discarded tile and placing into her row before showing her winning hand. For serious mahjong players this disqualifies your winning hand. Or maybe that's also part of the symbolism here.

This is a killer scene 🎬 I just love how she beats her at her own game. “A poor, low class, immigrant”

I hope this makes people realize that no matter the culture, race, ethnicity, and or class there is always some form of prejudice and or racism even with Asian with other Asians. Good lesson here!

Such an American movie..."What about his happiness?" Today's generation doesn't understand duty, responsibility, and dedication to family supersede "happiness". Besides, happiness is fleeting by eating a bad meal, or because you didn't get enough sleep. That is a terrible metric to gauge your life.

The line where Rachel says, “a poor, raised by a single mother, low class immigrant nobody" is a double edged statement that could indicate that Rachel has heard these words thrown at her by racist bullies in America...as well as being rejection by her "own kind" in an Asain country...

It's refreshing to know that God's love does not look down on others, nor step on people to feel powerful, that is the mindset of toxicity and satan. The fruits of the spirit and those that carry it, show it and express it delightfully are truly wealthy indeed ❤❤ God bless all ❤️🌍

Rachel’s mom’s stare scene is so powerful as it shows how her mom gave a sad and pitying look other than hatred. Eleanor must have felt like being slapped by that stare.. Mahjong scene is one of the best soft revenge scene ever made.

I believe I saw that they exchanged a slight nod at the end of the scene, and Eleanor started it first, which means she began to grow some respect for Rachel and her mom whom she before this scene, had always looked down on. I have never watched this movie but guess this would be the turning point of the story.

To the moms out there, your net-worth lays within the children you raised, not the money you accumulated. In this clip, Rachel's mom knows that she is as rich as Nick's mom and it is even more impressive when she raised Rachel to such a wonderful character as a single mom, with limited resource.

too be honest, Rachel came in just as judgemental towards Eleanor . When Nick and Rachel was driving back from the dinner at the family mansion, it was rude of Rachel to insinuate that Eleanor wasn't an attentive mother towards Nick, they just have different ways of life and Nick still had a good family structure around him. Eleanor opinion of Rachel was spot on the money, saying Rachel wouldn't understand there traditional customs for the greater benefit of the family, Because of this, it later caused a rift between Eleanor and Nick relationship, which is what Eleanor was probably afraid of. Approaching your potential future mother in law in that way is not ideal. The fact that Rachel can sit there and act like a victim is beyond me.

I sincerely feel the full release or climax of this movie's tension is with her mother's final look to Eleanor, and that music. It makes me cry.
