my best friend's son-in-law bought a new Macan last year. It's not even one year old yet and it already racked up $17,000 in warranty repairs(which Porsche paid for under warranty).... Is this normal? If it's my own car in that situation, I'll probably look into adding a 7-year factory extended warranty... or selling it just before the factory standard warranty runs out.... :( My friend, on the other hand, thinks that his son-in-law should be happy that Porsche had so many items repaired/replaced under warranty. His thinking is that nothing else can go wrong because everything that needs fixing has already been fixed.... (I'm the glass half-empty kind of guy... and he's the glass half-full guy) :)

Hey theres actually an updated part. Where the upper timming cover screws break or come loose. It solves the leak.
The tbox is soft. Front trailing arm bushings can't be prone to failure.
Sunroof drains need to be cleaned often.
Coolant likes to leak from a little pipe under the intake. Where new ones need injectors if you run crappy gas .
Theres cylinder scoring so ask for a bore scope visual.
Definitely buy one used as a CPO from a Porsche dealer. Or New

And some say the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is unreliable? I like the Macan, but would sooner have the Stevio Quadrifoglio.

Ok I agree with most things but VW DSG in manual and PDK in automatic or manual cannot compare, the time lag is notacible in VW. It is almost immediate besides turbo lag on Turbo, GTS, or Turbo with performance package, but the shift is immediate and you can jump down 2/3 gears right away. So like driving 5th gear, you can go 3rd and in VW you can't it goes 4th and then 3rd....It's super slow compared to a porsche on a windy road trying to pass a car on short bends.

Otherwise great review :)

You can replace the timing chain cover bolts without removing the engine but it's tricky. You take out the airbox and then the intake pipe and yopu can see in a mirror the offending timing chain cover bolts. Then with a micro ratchet with a t25 or t30 bit you can unbolt the broken bolts. I replaced mine with stainless steel allen head bolts with brass washers and lots of antisieze.

Partial information so do take all this to heart. Do research more than this video. I’ve had my Macan S since 2014 NO issues special order car and a dream to own. Number one get PPI before purchase. 😊

I have a Macan S 2017, bought used with 22,000 miles on the clock. Has now done 51,000 in 4.5 years, all I've needed apart from regular servicing is 2 rear tyres and I'm getting 2 front tyres next week. Oh, it does 40mpg! Beat that!

If tour a mechanic at heart, I'd bet you could fix a leaking timing chain pan gasket yourself. But, curious, how often does a timing chain need to be replaced? That could be costly...

I realise this was a US spec model and my comments relate to UK spec RHD Macan S diesel 2018 model. In a word, crap. Having had 2 other Porsche models before I was told by two dealers that it would be "a proper Porsche, drive like a sports car". Well it isn't, and it didn't. Not only was it a bad Porsche, it was probably the worst handling car I've owned. In standard suspension setting (which is the only comfortable one on bumpy Scottish roads) it rolled around corners like an elephant on a waterbed. It was like the front end and the back end had been designed by two committees who didn't speak to each other. Turn the wheel and the car had a little discussion between the front and back wheels and then voted to see if it would respond to the input. By which time the bend was upon you and it felt like the car just wanted to go straight on, and then at the last minute changed its mind and reluctantly hauled its lardy ass round the bend. Even driving in a straight line it felt like it was corkscrewing its way down the road. It simply could not handle lateral and longitudinal movement at the same time. Add in vertical and it fell apart. I felt sick every time I drove it. So I tried sport mode, which did reduce the body roll a bit but left you with a ride like a steamroller and the tyres pattering like Fred Astaire's feet. So as a sports car it was about as sporty as an IKEA sofa.

The PDK was a clunky lump. OK once it was on the move, the paddle shift was quick. But it is quicker on a BWM with the 8 speed ZF box. If you relied on kick down when in auto mode, you'd be left wondering if the gearbox was awake it took so long to respond. On a slight incline start from stationary, the box puts itself in neutral so if you then say "giddy up" and push the gas peddle, it CLUNKS into drive about a second later and lurches forward like Dean Martin heading for the bar. Just awful.

And so it goes on. Yes the car is well made. Yes the cooling seats waft nice breezes up your butt cheeks in hot weather. And the panoramic roof is lovely. But for £45k I expected something that was noticeably better than my MINI. Honestly I could drive the MINI 20-30 mph faster round any bend than the Macan.

And worst of all - it RATTLED. From somewhere in the rear parcel shelf. Dealer would not fix it as it said rattles not covered by Porsche's useless two year warranty. The transfer box that had been replaced at 31k miles because it whined, failed legal inspection in less than 12 months because the factory fitted drain plug had worked loose and oil was leaking. Dealer tried to con me into thinking it it was not covered by the 12 months parts warranty and then had to be told by another dealer that the plug was an integral part of the box so it was. After they took £100 from me just to look at it.

So do yourself a favour and if you want this kind of car buy the Audi. It cannot possibly be any worse. (and most of the parts are AUDI anyway even if Porsche thinks it has tweaked the car). Actually, strike that. Just buy yourself a 5 series BMW - superior car in every respect. I now have a 335d xDrive. Very happy now. No more Porsches.

For goodness sake, learn how to change the oil yourself. You’ll save huge money and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Have a 2017 S PDK transmission went out at 70 thousand miles. The dealer does not repair only replace they hold you hostage. The price is 20 thousand. So be aware when buying this car its expensive to fix.

As a Porsche service advisor I would like to tell you that when it comes to the timing cover leak it is not a crazy expensive repair. Porsche originally mandated that engines be taken out of the vehicle in order to stop the leak but have now published a fix that allows a Porsche technician to replace the broken timing cover bolts (that’s the culprit) in 2-3 hours. I have broken timing cover bolts in my desk at work to show people lol I hope this gives a little peace of mind should you get a leak from there. Don’t let anybody take the engine out it’s NOT necessary EVEN by Porsche’s official factory warranty regulations.

Very informative video. Been doing a bit of research for a few days because I came across a beautiful Macan S. I happen to be in the market for a car and this car looks great. Has 107K miles, and I plan on doing a pre-purchase inspection with a local mechanic. I don’t mind the big maintenance budget that comes with performance, so I am very interested in the car. Is there anything else you would do before purchasing? The auto check came back with a score of 91.

We have had 2 Macans, both needed a transfer box replaced. Original warranty was 5 years, Porsche extended this to 7 years as it became a known problem. Both were done just out of the original warranty before Porsche extended it. Both were not fixed at Porsche (Porsche quoted £3,000 to £4,000, but we had them done at a specialist for around £1,500) Porsche refused to refund even after the warranty was extended as we didn't repair it through them. Fabulous cars though, just about to collect a new 2023 Macan S. The warning signs of a transfer box failure are very slight juddering when going slow and through the lower gears.

Why can’t you rotate the tires side to side? Yeah, you’d have to pay to have them taken off and mount them and balance them again, but you could do it.

I love my 2017 Macan S I have had no maintenance issues at ( currently at 25K miles) buuut I am going through the same issue with the driver door switch now. I saw that same video of the guy who popped it out and he used plastic pry tools to keep from scratching. I plan to do some tune upgrades and wheels changes but thats it. I love the handle its fun to drive. Its my introduction to Porsche ownership after being an Audi person for years and now I want a 911 Targa 4S. Random: I recently test drove the Aston Martin DBX 707 and all I can say is OMG. If you have a dealership where you live Im in Vegas please go see this beast of an SUV

My 2016 Macan Turbo just passed 90,000 miles. The transfer case was replaced under warranty last year. I plan to keep this wonderful car as long as I can. 7 years old and it looks and drives like the day I bought her. I replaced the brakes 2 years ago and tires last November. This year (barring something out of the blue), I expect to pay about $300 to have the oil changed and I have no other planned expenses.

Had the timing chain cover / oil leak issue with my Macan S. Luckily, the vehicle was still under warranty because they did have to drop the engine in order to do the repair. It never ran the same again when I got it back. Traded it for a base Macan....Carmine red. Vehicle looks great but the 248 hp is weak. I plan to sell it this year . Going electric this year.
