Nice video as a fashion photographer I use a ring light all the time in fact I have used it on many playboy playmate assignments! I still use it today it’s a great way to use as a fill light in a naturally lit room on location it’s not just for shooting in the studio with a model up against the wall!

Photogrammetry (turning hundreds of pics into a 3d model of an object), benefits hugely from ring lights as you need extremely even, zero shadow flash on your objects

Could you just use a circular polarizer to get rid of the reflections on the glasses or would that not work

Great video. I've bought that Elixxier software and I agree, it is very cool. You can simulate any lighting setup imaginable and get a good idea of what works with less time experimenting with your actual hardware. It's also a fun lighting tool to attempt to reverse engineer someone else's work.

The Flashpoint was the only one I could find that would allow my 16-35 to fit. So that was a plus. And it has plenty of power. However, for my real estate work it created two problems. First, the inverse square problem. Second, it DOES create shadows, as David said. A chandelier in the middle of the room creates big time shadows all over the walls behind.A huge problem in post. But it IS a cool light for macro and product work.

Thank you for this needed explanation!
Do the macro flashes in the notes fit around or replace hoods?

Great information on ring lights and to best use of them. Software is very handy tool to have for planning out shoot ahead of time. Other one to keep away in the bag of photo tips

Flat light from ringlights is terrible.
I gave up trying to use them for anything except for fill decades ago.
They still seem popular among forensic photogs.

1980's??? I was using a smaller one(Sigma EM-140) well into the 2000's shooting in local nightclubs for their Myspace pages. I only used it occasionally, but it created a fun kind of 'photo booth' look. It seems that all the small ring flashes except one(Godox ML150) are gone, replaced by LED units. The only true 'flash' units now are the larger(Flashpoint & AlienBees) & very expensive(Broncolor & Elinchrom) rings. Not that I'd have a lot of use for one these days.

Thank you for the tips. Get a variable right light, most of the time you want to work on the skin tone otherwise it looks like to was taken in a bathroom. Also...if you are using a ring light to make a portrait...have the model with a nice necklace, or use hands,,is a lot of skin to cover. Not fancy of using it a night..but that's just me.

Why would a black v-flat kill shadows, wouldn’t it add more shadow?

You didn't mention the ONLY thing I use a ring flash for, and that's when shooting Macro! It gives the nice, even on-axis light necessary for anything so small that the camera and/or lens are in the way of lighting the subject. The ring light excels in this aspect. To be perfectly honest, I never thought to use it as an on-axis light for a portrait. Just my two cents...

Ring flashes are for macro photography. A flash on top of the camera has too much parallax.
