about the lightbulbs.

yes, they did all agree to make the bulbs have a shorter lifespan. the treason was to have a brighter, whiter light. the standard was a compromise between color, brightness and life.

ive seen the longest glowing bulb, i have seen candles brighter than it.

overall, lightbulbs arn't as great of an example of planned obsolescenceas things like fast fashion and tech that isnt user serviceable

i like planned obsolescence cause it adds some well needed CHALLENGE to repairing your own things! have you ever tried repairing something when you have the right part?? ITS WAY TOO EASY!!

Dude, the insta pot company was absorbed by a hedge fund, and, forced to overborrow, as is standard practice.

They do this to "small" businesses, those with less then 40,000 employees, like vice, to employ a new CEO they like, who borrows the maximum amount against the company, gives it to the hedge fund manager, then, gets paid to help the company file for bankruptcy, like Murdoch did.

Honestly, there should be a " jail time or less jail time if you help them file bankruptcy" option, but.... Instead, they just get paid one last time to pay of the debts THEY caused, after forcing out the old owners, once the company is publicly traded.

Little problem in the research there Cody. : /

Were given that great old gift of OPPORTUNITY ya know, to go out and spend twice as much money for the same damn product with a slight variation. Ohhh, progress, what a beautiful thing!!!! Lmao

that's a shame about the instapot company. if anything should be encouraged it is that quality of product. Imagine if the research and development was reimbursed after 10 years if the products are determined to be safe, economical, reliable and waste-friendly.
free market will not solve any other problem than the obstacles in the way of getting more money.

I don't think fast fashion is planned obsolescence. Customers just don't want to pay what is costs to get a quality garment made. Minimum wage for a full-time job in the uk is probably around £1400 a month after taxes. You can get a t shirt for £3-5. So that's around 0.25% of your net monthly wage. Go back to the 50s and show me you could get a T shirt or tanktop for such a small % of your salary. I make garments myself. People just don't appreciate the costs of quality materials and quality garment construction techniques. They shall don't want to pay wages for Western garment workers, hence they buy stuff made by slaves in Asia.

Planned obsolescence is only good at destroying our planet. Combined with not having the right to repair, witch makes no sense. If I buy something I should be able to use that item for anything I want. Can people just get there head out of there ass and do things that don't create endless trash. You actually need a phone to live in today's society, let's not have to replace it every freaking 2 years. Big tech is actually the thing destroying our planet the most. If they are going to sell me trash, they should be held accountable for actually recycling this trash.

oh, this is a planned obsolescence episode? i feel like i just watched a video by Unlearning Economics about this, lol...

edit: nevermind, i'm behind on Cody Showdy, that UE video was more recent xD

P.S. you're not going to be "gaming" much on a $700 Windows PC, at least not without some stress involved if you like any games with poor optimization and/or high graphical demands, and/or high CPU demands. i mean, sure, if it's Fortnite on minimum settings, or Minecraft on minimum settings, Halo: The Master Chief Collection should be mostly okay, or even Old School Runescape, then $700 should be fine... but good luck with GTA5, Witcher 3, Halo Infinite, Borderlands 3, or Control.

In support of Apple’s part serialisation policy, I think they would argue that unvetted components could provide security breaches. Given how much valuable information passes through a mobile device allowing an unregistered component I. That chain could be a massive security hole.

The light bulb conspiracy wasn't a real thing. The old light bulb in that firehouse is noteworthy because it's the only one still running that long, while all the others burned out. And also barely shines, at all. Even after the cartel dissolved, longevity didn't really improve.

Ответить
@zacharyhenderson2902
@zacharyhenderson2902 - 17.11.2023 07:52

Some of these issues are down to playing tops lessons, while others can simply be chocked up to finding cheaper mass manufacturing techniques which aren't conducive to longevity. Other issues, like those in appliances containing refrigerant, are largely because of environmental regulations.

Been about three years and they're going more than strong. The lower volume button is busted, but I don't care.

Planned obsolescence backed up by complete recycling is conceptually a valid idea. Ideally it stimulates and finances technical improvement. The reality though is quite different as we all know.

What astonishes me is not that consumers increasingly fall for it, but that even major corporations,, who have the weight to create their own environment, and supposedly have a drive for efficiency, fall for it too.

I worked for an express carrier whose name I won't mention, who created in the 80's a handheld scanning device, that was in use for the next 30 years. It was totally proprietary, designed in house, was rugged and reliable. We literally had people using daily hardware that was 20 years old. These were replaced by off the shelf Microsoft based devices, that have to be completely replaced every couple of years, and are fragile and failure prone. The company decided with eyes wide open to ride the MS bus, when they don't have to, and absorb the massive cost increase and performance decrease.

My mother received a canister vacuum for her wedding in 1965 (Montgomery Wards). I used this thing throughout my childhood. It was nigh-indestructable. It ruined me for all other vacuums as it picked up anything and everything. The retractable cord slowed down a little over the years, but never failed.
In 2005, Mom could no longer find bags for the vacuum (Wards went out of business in 2001, the new one is not the same store). She called a repair shop who came out to check on the vacuum. He could not rig a bag to fit the vacuum and have it work (at least he said), but he offered her $1000 and a new vacuum to replace hers. He put the vacuum on display at his shop where he had a small museum's worth of vintage vacuums.
Now, I can look up vintage vacuum bags that fit on Etsy, alas.
They literally don't make them like they used to.

you don't seem to think there's a LED cartel? LED bulbs often claim 15.000 hours on the label, but they rarely last very long - most of them seem to fritz or glitch after a year or two. the LED itself might last 15.000 hours in theory, but the electronics in the bulb are usually cheap and flimsy, and burn out long before the LED ever would. it's hard to think they couldn't make a lasting LED bulb, but why would they?
