What Are Web Components?

today I was asked about the web components on an interview of senior Frontend React dev position, and my answer was WTF what is it. Ok, I know what the shadow DOM is, modules, etc.. But why such questions are coming up - it's a strange for me. Custom-tags, really? Who is using that nowadays?

But what is the original use case for custom elements? What type of site or web app needs this sort of construct - and why are custom elements the best solution to this challenge?

Cool stuff. Any idea how one could securely inject an api key into a web component?

Cant we simply use web component and dodge react or vue. Technically its possible and it would be more efficient and less bandwidth heavy.
