The inside of my toilet parts don't look anything like the one in the video. I'm so confused as to which parts are one in my toilet.
I have a Kohler Toilet, does that make a difference with the insides or do the insides vary from toilet brand to toilet brand. I apologize if I am asking "dumb" questions but I am a single female that was a full time caregiver for my mom and dad and I worked from home as a programmer. My sweet dad always fixed everything around the house, even changing the oil in his cars. He was the kind of man that just knew how to do things for himself to care for the lovely home he built for our family. If dad didn't know something he would go to the library, back when we didn't have Google or the internet, or ask a handy man friend or even go to the hardware store for advice. Mom and dad recently passed away within hours of each other this past March and I have been grieving so much that when I heard the downstairs toilet running I called a friend to ask them what to do and they said to cut the water off. I was able to do that with guidance and it bought me some time to let the stress of that go for a bit because I have an upstairs toilet. Well, as you would know it one week later the upstairs toilet started acting just like the downstairs toilet so now they are both in need of repair.
It makes sense that they would both have issues at the same time because I bought new toilets and had them installed at the same time.
Iam trying to learn as much as I can to care for the home my mom and dad built and raised me in and now live in but I am afraid I will have to call a plumber.
With today's economy and the high price of a plumber to fix two toilets without understanding what the issues could be and the average costs of repairs i could very easily be taken advantage of from lack of knowledge.
If anyone has any advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. I am very willing to learn and would like to at least be able to speak with a plumber and understand what he says is wrong with my toilets and why it will cost whatever they charge.

Great video! I have a question. What if I have done all of this and my toilet is still running every 15 minutes or so like it’s filling up?

When I flush my toilet it sounds like I hear water drips but no sign of water.

There’s a little red thing that broke and the flapper doesn’t close properly

This is why I like a basic toilet. All of it is really easy to fix. Sometimes they’re a little tougher when nothing has been taken apart in awhile.

I got the line disconnected but the I can't get the piece under the toilet to come off. It's so tight. I got it a little loose but it won't go any further. Any suggestions?

Thanks Roger, I only needed to change the flapper, but your video did the trick.

I watched another video on how to replace the diaphragm. It was a great video. I was able to change it, but after 3 tries, it still leaked. So I watched your video on how to change out the assembly & voila! No leak! You guys gave me the confidence I needed to attempt this fix! Thanks!

This is probably a dumb question but could a random running toilet run your water bill up significantly?

Toilet's been running for probably months. Replaced the flapper and it "slowed down". Then I watch this video and poof, it was the cap cleaning that fixed mine. Also side note, my son found a golden yin yang cufflink and brought it home to me, I now see where he found it ;-P

I appreciate you putting these videos out…you’ve helped me more than once. This time, I can’t get the top off the fill valve to check that inside piece. Any tips on that? Thank you!
