I understand why there are not as many security measures on the Washington one dollar bill, but why is the design still the old one with the small portrait and not enlarged like every other denomination was in the late 20th Century? It clashes with the rest, and since they have to destroy old singles anyway why not redesign it to match the others??

btw, the origin of the dollar sign is simply this: It started as writing the initials U and S superimposed over each other, so that it made a single symbol. It eventually shortened to just the two vertical lines instead of the full U, and now its often written with just one vertical line, $. But originally it was the letters U and S imposed on each other, and in fact, if you look at some old documents you will see that the two vertical lines that go through the S are often connected on the bottom, forming the U. Its pretty obvious.
