Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania collectively share a more-than 1000-kilometre-long border with Russia and Belarus. Having regained their independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union some three decades ago, these three small countries have developed innovative and business-friendly economies. But as the war in Ukraine drags on, their position - right on NATO`s frontline with Russia – once again leaves them facing an existential challenge. In this edition of Business Beyond, we zoom in on three industries: cybersecurity, energy and defense, and assess how the Baltics have responded to and adapted their economies in the face of Russian aggression. From cyber attacks on critical infrastructure to eliminating dependence on Russian gas and preparing for a possible invasion, this is the story of how three nations are fighting for their future on several fronts.

Great feel good story. I don't think it can be explained in a few minuets. Germany has beach front on the Baltic Sea. They think EU, but you left them off of the list. Why would Russia attack Poland when they could attack other countries on the Baltic who would be an easier target closer to their own beach front on the Baltic? I could only hope the EU would think like the Baltic countries. They get it. And, they have my respect.

It's refreshing seeing the Baltics represented as the sober realists they have been all along, as opposed to the alarmists they were accused of being for so many years.

Imagine what would happen if more people get injured. They are capped on a regular summer day just treating locals... Just sayin'

I would say that any country that supports NATO troops fighting in Ukraine, supports NATO troops defending any non-NATO countries simply asks for trouble (including my very own Poland). The only countries that they should keep defending should be NATO countries and ONLY those. I would be ashamed of Poland's interference in Ukraine if the direct war with Russia will ever break out. What's the point of risking it all and trying to save a non-nato country with billions of dollars of our aid if that very same country keeps calling you "Moscow's friend". There is no point!

It’s a shame that we Europeans allowed ourselves to be dependent from a dictator’s will for our essential energy supplies. That’s especially true for such manifacturing economies like Germany. I really hope this predicament will teach us a lesson about considering safety requirements above mere economic considerations. And not only on energy matters.

A factual mistake. Baltic countries did NOT gain independance after soviet Union colapsed. Them becoming independant was one of the reasons Soviet Union colapsed as other countries followed. Lithuanian independance declarstion was made March 11th of 1990. SU stopped exicting December 1991 - 1,5 years later. Yes, many reasons led to SU beeing weak at the time, but still strong factual mistake on DW part.

Several questions regarding the current situation come to mind- one of them is, if Putin is bad, when was the last time Russia was " good"?
When Gorbachev and Yeltsin were the Presidents, you say?
Does that mean that a " good " Russia is the only one when it is on it's s knees?
Russia ( and China) do not tell you what to do, think and how to run your society, while the " Leader Of The Free World" the United States of America INSISTS on all these things, so they can completely control your country.
Germany is a perfect example, an occupied country by the USA who is willingly submitting itself to have their industry destroyed because that is in America's best interest.

Something important to know, for all who interested in history and/or support Ukraine:

Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus'.

Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise.

Its name “Russia" received only in the 18th century, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name into the “All Russian Empire” (Russia originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Rus')
Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even punished for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and were forced to call themselves Russian.

Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'.

In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership.

“Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village.

Moreover, in the Italian sources of the 15th century it is likewise mentioned, that Russia is bordered by Poland to the west, Lithuania and Livonia to the north, and Muscovy to the east, further proving that Russia historically speaking, is an exonym of Ukraine, that was stolen by Muscovy.

Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'–Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!

Why are we pretending that Russia is the threat here? In more than 2 years, Russia has lost its best trained soldiers and equipement. The real threat is China they have the power to completely annhilate the world economy and if they attack Taiwan neither the USA or Europe can stop them. Putins' Russia is economically, politically and militarily weakened. China has only been growing in all sectors and upgrading its capabiltiies.
