If I use hydrating sheet masks to frequently or use too much lip balm, or a combination of the two, I get a lot of cold sores.

I was using snail mucin , cetaphil cream and cerave retinol. I didn’t realize I had combo skin and this was clogging my pores . Switched to a SA cleanser , SA toner , and a light gel / moisturizer and my skin is clearing up . Acne comes from clogged pores . Too many / heavy products just sit on your skin because they aren’t being fully absorbed and clog pores . Use products according to your skin type .

This helps me so much! My skin LOVES moisture but I think I’ve recently overdone it and I got a ton of small tiny dots on my face…I’m giving my face a three day break before applying anything to it to let it rest and heal ❤

I thought I just naturally had dry skin on my face so I slathered on moisturizer for years and years. I read some articles about how it can make dry skin actually worse (it made sense the way they explained it). I skipped it last night and my skin feels so smooth right now. I’m gonna see how this goes.

Do you have any advice for severe eczema. I’ve tried pretty much everything lol but I like to ask as many educated people as I possibly can. Just incase there’s something I’ve missed. I’ve had horrible eczema since I was born. My mom had to put socks on my hands to stop me from scratching. I’m now 19 and it hasn’t gotten even remotely better and it’s affected pretty much every part of my body. I’ve started using CeraVe recently after having only used renew for the past 18 years. I also put Vaseline on my face before bed.

It’s was really interesting to hear. I have severe eczema so I’m definitely not having a problem of over hydration lol. I can put a super thick layer of lotion on my skin and my skin will be dry again within 30 minutes. I really love products with petrolatum in them. It lasts for about an hour or two instead of 30 minutes. I was buying a product with petrolatum the other day, and saw a review from someone fear mongering the dangers of petrolatum. I found the website they got their information from and then I did more of my own research and ended up buying it. It makes me really sad that someone else might have seen that review and not done the research and gotten scared off of buying things with petrolatum.

I really, like the lipikar lotion. I even use it on my face. And I'm actually one of these people who overdid it. I did this skin flooding trend out of curiosity and it totally gave my hyperhydration issues. Discontinued the habit and within one week my skin was fine. Very interesting experiment though. I'm just glad I didn't have some photo appointment 🙈🤣

Yes, you can overdo anything, if you try hard enough. My own skin on my face has it's own way of telling me I've used too much. My sin isn't moisturizing, it's using too much product when I remember to do it. If my face is inflamed--I get acne. If everything has been hunky-dory, I get milia. Oh what fun. So, as a 65-year old with greasy skin, it's Neutrogena HydroBoost gel for me.

Over all I did learn a lot about this. I have a younger brother (7) who due to covid has turned into a huge germaphobe. Whenever he can was his hands he will, whenever he can moisturize with lotion he will. He has eczema, so knowing the lotion helps to some degree is nice. He applies it maybe even as often as 7 times a day if he can get away with it. I worry that it will dry out his skin, and I actually watched this video to try and see if it would, only to find that you just gave examples of extreme being “oh, if they apply every 2 seconds that is what extreme is”. To someone with autism like me, that description of extreme does nothing but confuse me and make me wonder what the hell extreme really is, or “too much”. He recently has been dealing with dry skin, my guess is that is due to his new fear of germs and his constant hand washing and lotion using. You talked a lot about over moisturizing, but I heard relatively little about the effects that lotion could have on drying ones skin, if anything at all.

I couldn’t say where or when I heard about it, but if there is a reasonable “too much” what is it? Every twelve seconds is obviously an over exaggeration, and won’t help me. Is there anybody who can give me the knowledge so I can help my brother avoid messing up his skin? If that is even a danger

Neosporin made an eczema moisturizer that was hands down the best I've ever used. Originally bought it for my son's eczema, but found it worked wonders for my dry skin. Accidentally learned it was also fantastic on mild sun burned skin when on vacation as well. Of course they stopped making it, but I'd love to know what it was in the ingredients that made it so special so I could maybe find a replacement. I don't think it was simply the colloidal oatmeal active ingredient. Nothing has worked as well, even when wet-wrapping prior to applying moisturizer to semi-damp skin afterwards.

Kinda strange but, I always put my moisturizer on wet skin as soon as I am done washing my face, or once I get out of the shower. Lately though I’ve been waiting for it get semi-dry, and then applying, and I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my skin. Less red, more smooth, less porous, just looks healthier. Not sure why this is, but maybe I was overmoisturizing? Unsure.

I hope more doctors would actually be interested in what they do and what products are out there , but not just derms but all doctors.

I’m curious what you would say that for me during the summer months , going to the pool and being exposed to chlorine actually makes my acne dry out and clear up! Chlorine for me and the pool act opposite and make my skin better. But then again I’m not in the pool non stop. I do get out and dry in the sun and then get back in the pool again

If you are prone to heat/sweat rash under your breasts, armpits/crevice areas (it's a problem for me in the Summer) I highly recommend using a body powder that contains salicylic acid like Gold Baum and/or a lotion that has an AHA in it. Avoid "wet" deodarants or dry them with a hair dryer after application. Keep your skin moisturized but "dry" as much as possible.

I've been using the neutrogena hydro boost body gel cream as a face moisturizer, and that stuff is amazing!!! I have dry, sensitive skin. I rarely get pimples but found that when I put any kind of moisturizer or foundation on my face, I would be finding a new pimple everyday. It was getting frustrating because without moisturizer my face would be so dry and scaley and itchy. This stuff is amazing! My face hasn't ever been this soft and smooth, and I don't get pimples! Not to mention, the itchiness on my face has gone down significantly. A big part of this moisturizer is petrolatum, and I think that is what has helped so much.
