Yeah no matter how much proof I see, I will not accept them, he does eat his "tail". I've seen it multiple times with my hunting group back in the days, and we even had to do things like baiting him to other areas to avoid it. I will not listen to lies telling me otherwise.
On a more serious note, maybe it was just one of us trolling and sneaking meat under the tail or an unsynchronised small monster dying there.
In any case, it's still in my head canon, and I guess it would also make sense in the lore, I mean why would he not eat his tail.

I was like "I swear Deviljho could eat his tail, I saw it many times playing tri on wii" I played so many online hours. But! I remembered that people did put meat on the tail once it was cut, now it all makes sense

I remember jho actually eat his own tail in mh4u. I thought it was a normal think because it happens to me multiple times.

I played monster Hunter 3rd on emulator and saw him eat his tail… I remember because i was pissed I couldn’t carve it.. I didn’t even know this was a legend till now.

As someone who has fought and cut off multiple deviljho tails, he has never eaten the tail. Im going to go with the client sides small monster theory for why people remember seeing it.

In MHW I saw a Deviljho eating a dead deviljho carcass. There is a an event quest in low/high rank where you have to kill two tempered deviljhos in the ancient forest. I swear you can try it yourself

In tri when a monster eats an item like meat or a dead carcass like aptonoth it causes the eaten object to fade out of the game. This would cause problems if tails could be eaten as they hold valuable carves.

Here's my theory on the whole thing...

The feature was likely originally planned, but would be cut before release because of the simple fact that the tail being eaten would effectively rob the player of a hard earned material, and thus making the act of cutting off the tail less enjoyable and remove any incentive to even try in the first place

Devil Jho does eat his own tail. I have played Monster Hunter since day one. I have logged in over 30,000 hours into the series. Nice try on trying to make content. Certain things you needed to do to trigger it. Only skilled hunts know the truth. Your using Monster Hunter Tri... Nothing worked in Tri Tri was worst Monster Hunter in series. They fixed it in MH ultimate. So basically you played Tri. A beta. 😂

honestly the only one to blame here is capcom... because itd be such a cool feature its just a missed opportunity they never added it in further installements for real

Pretty sure as a kid when I was playing 4 ultimate I remember seeing a deviljho eat his own tail. It’s still pretty faint in my memory but I remember seeing him or another deviljho (not sure which it’s been a long time) eat another (or it’s own) tail while I was hunting it on heavens mount.

This makes sense since the tail wouldn't count as a "body" on the field, but a "shiny drop", in terms of programming nodes. "Defeated (hunted or captured)" monsters are a different entity and drop pool than a severed tail. All predatory large monsters have a method of hunting a prey species when their stamina is low, Jho just has his field widened to include other Large Monsters, but that field STILL doesn't include "Shiny drops".
Oh, and the area the "totally legit" clip has of Jho eating in the frozen cave? Fight Gigginox, drain it's stamina, and see where it goes to eat... Which is that very spot as it eats the bones sticking out of the ice in that room.

Ive seen it eat its own tail cant recall what game it was but i remember it happening because we have a friend whos a massive loot gremlin who always no matter what will go for the carve as soon as he can and it ate it as he was trying to carve it and we all were shocked and like wtf!!

As someone new to monter hunter, after watching this video...if people care so much that he eats, why not make a mod? There are very talented animators out there that can pour their magic into something a passionate community wishes to see.
