It is frankly reassuring to hear that it takes YEARS to reach some kind of "fluency" as it makes the current struggle to understand the basics OK! That it's not "bad" if I am still at a beginner level even after months of studying. Knowing that motivates me because having learnt Japanese, it was exactly the same thing!! The first couple years were quite fruitless but then, it really began piling up and I'd say, after six or seven years, I could truly start feeling comfortable. Now it's been eleven years with Japanese and I feel "fluent" - still learning new words here and there when I read or listen to the news - but I feel very comfortable with it and don't need to "think" about it. I'm excited and hope to get to that level with Russian someday - in many years!! The journey is the fun part though!!! Once you've "made it", it'll feel weirdly nostalgic to look back at what you did!!
It is not true that you can't understand the language in few months. Well depends on person. But I have learned 70% of Russian only thru music and all that in 7 months. I'm writing in english because honestly I can't find the letters fast on russian keyboard. But yes it is possible, depends how many langs you know, and how fast you can learn them. I currently speak almost 5 languages.
Gracias!
You are amazing, thanks for this useful content. 🫶🤝
Max. your style of teaching keeps me motivated.. like you said, if your interested you will learn more. true words..
Thanks for making this video. I remember after first learning Russian, I thought I would be able to understand some basic Russian. By chance I ended up on holiday in Tajikistan... and I thought I had lost all my brain cells/fooled myself when I could barely understand a single word over there. Only on my return to London via Moscow, when I could suddenly understand the Moscow workers in the airport did it click how much accent, diction & speed mattered.
Hello Max. i missed this old video!! A great lesson!! i can understand many words and phrases!
I've just discovered your channel and I love it. This video was so helpful as I've been learning for almost 1 year and it can be discouraging. But after watching this I feel even more motivated to continue and to never give up. Thank you Max! 😊

This video makes me feel full of joy. I've come far in my Russian skill, and I've been learning for about 410 days. I find this video highly motivating. Thank you so much for this channel.
But I am trying to learn a how russian works and build on it
TLDR: please upload this video transcripts! 🙏
Hi Max! I'm not gonna try and say all of this in Russian. I'm not there just yet. I love your podcasts. To be honest I'm not a Russophile, I started learning Russian because I love learning languages and being able to consume content from different cultures and communicate with people who otherwise I wouldn't be able to communicate with. But your podcasts are so interesting. You really know how to reach to people, and spark interest in the language and the culture of a nation which, due to the current situation, doesn't look very appealing these days. Thank you for providing honest, interesting, and useful content for Russian language learners like me.
I've purchased the life time membership (and I highly recommend it!) and I see the transcripts for this introductory video are missing. I know you probably don't consider this a "content" video but rather an introduction to your channel. But I would definitely love to be able to check the transcripts, as probably many other members do.
Keep rocking! You really encourage people to learn
Native speakers shorten words like crazy.
After one year in podgotovitelnom fakultete, I had difficulty understanding native speakers.
For example...
Alexander Alexandrovich
became
San sanich
How the hell is one supposed to know that is what someone is saying?
And they speak so fast that by the time you try to unravel one phrase, they've dropped five more.
You just sit there perplexed, wondering what language they're speaking.
Teach me Russian
Ответитьспасибо маx! Found your podcast after hearing about Stephen Krashen's Comprehensible Input Theory from Matt Vs Japan's channel. Started listening to your podcast and a few others (лекции арзамас, так вышло, и КритИышь) also watching In Russian from Afar's channel, and the Comprehensible Russian channel to get a feel for how Russian is spoken at various speeds and by various people , I get maybe 1-10% of what is said in any of the Russian audio I listen to still after about 3-4 months starting from zero, but it's getting better and it's slowly improving. Started reading some graded readers in Russian and found I could actually read and understand some of it! I insanely appreciate how well you try to articulate your speech and your comprehensibility. Subscribed here too! It's hard to know what exactly I should do or listen to and finding content that's actually helping me understand/learn more Russian and is interesting rather than just being a noisy input that wastes time. Can't thank you enough for doing these entirely in Russian.
So you are all right if your native language is not Slavic, you'll need a lot of time to start understanding Russian speech. Fortunately, my native language is Slavic and this makes me another problem, that I think I could understand or even speak even if I am not actually able to understand or speak.
By the way I've watched whole video without English subtitles...
Thank you so much Max this is amazing teaching, such a great energy and mindset, i love the way you explain and the content of your videos, it really encourages me to keep learning Russian! I just signed up to be a Patreon, thank you Max!
Difficulties in understanding casual Russian speech largely come from the numerous semi-unconscious shortenings of frequent words which Russians usually make, especially when the word appears unstressed. Some of those are listed in dictionaries, some aren't at all.
The best Max you are a great teacher and skillful entertainer! Hope to see you someday!
I'm so hapoy that I've discovered your channel, it is very useful. You are the only one I can almost understand, of course with the help of subtitles. Thank you so much! I wish everyone would talk like you😂
