I wonder that this much extra material, customization and woodworking you could have just built the bookcases too, there is very little that ikea shelf is doing lol :D

Looks great however putting it on top of the existing flooring makes me shudder to think about replacing flooring years down the line.

Nice bookcase but why black?? We dont even see the detailing of crown molding with black. I would gave done a faux fini - cream with a dry brush of gold or even brown so it would emphasize the lovely design of the crown molding. It just seems that everyone today wants to use black. Black is not a colour and it is used everywhere. Black is passé.

Am I the only one that noticed you didn't put on an outlet cover for the reveal?

I love it the only thing that I would’ve done different was kept the trim around it and the ceiling molding all in white I just think that would look nicer for me but it’s great job lotta work

I have a huge library room in my house with four Billy book cases as well as 8 Kallax record shelf’s that I’ve been going crazy to figure out building a base so it’s not just on the floor. This has me understanding how to strengthen and get both of them up higher. Thanks so much y’all rock.I’m talking about expanding because I also need shelves for close to 1000 dvds, 1500 records and now even one more Billy totaling 5.

How deep is the bookcase?

My only comment: that top molding trim would look nice with an accent. As in, touch up a few of the details with a rub on metallic finish. Gold to match the light fixture?

These look great! Curious if you did a comparison of buying lumber and building them without the IKEA units? You customized so much, I'm wondering if you "just" built them without buying from IKEA if it would have been even better.

Love this project! I cant wait to make my own. I was wondering how it was holding up? I use really heavy books so I've always been worried about bowing with cheap wood. (Happened with my old bookcase)

This looks really great. what i am struggling with is that you only used the outsdie frame of the ikea product + shelves. Seems like with a few more plywood pieces you didn't need those at all and it probably would have been more sturdy as well. It kind of minimizes the work you did to say you modifited the ikea piece - you didn't need it at all.

Curious how the thicker (3/4"?) MDF backing affected the depth with the base & wall supports especially if the added top extensions have the regular thin Ikea backing board?? Did you have to rejog anything?

With the amount of work that you put in to cover the bookshelves, and plug the holes, I am left wondering why you didn't just skip the bookshelves and just use MDF as a base.

Billy book cases suck because if you actually put books on them they will bow.
End of story , if you don’t want them to bow from weight you have to build your own or pay for better quality.

Thats a “thanks dad for building a really cool bookshelf…..”. Pretty sure with your skills….. you’re lucky to find a stud in the wall let alone jig saw cut your electrical outlets……. But nice job on the video editing……. Pretty sure that was all you !!!

This is an amazing tutorial and we’re using this as a guide for our own library wall! We are wondering however why you chose to go with the height extension unit instead of just going with the 93.5” tall bookcases to begin with? Is it because it was easier to manage the shorter bookcases? You may have already answered this question but I can’t seem to find it in the comments. 😊

I would have made few change. i would have extended the wall outlets and built them in to the lower support. that way i don't have to move things in bookcase to plug something in. I also would not have used the sliding ladder, and instead i would have put the IKEA OXBERG glass front doors on it, but then i live in the desert and have to deal with dust. I also would add some downward facing LED lighting behind the trim on the front of the shelves, add visibility to it at night. great project.

With the heavy books the shelves of the billy bookcase have a temdency to bow, did you do something to prevent this ?
