I always dethatch (if needed) aerate (leave the plugs on the ground) then top dress/overseed here in North Texas. I have a three acre lawn so I do not use the same equipment as you but the goal is the same

I do all of this but I get little results. Very patchy.

A soil test shows my fertilizer levels are fine, organic content 3.5%, and a 60% sand, 6% clay, 34% silt mix "sandy loam" designation

My lawn gets a lot of shade, about 6 hours direct sun

Seeing lawns like this makes me so jealous, I wonder what I could ever do

To clarify, scarify is not dethaching, it’s cutting into the soil that also generates thatch?

Dear Robbie, your all your videos are very usefull. But, all your lawns are small and flat.
What can we do if we have 4 or 5 time bigger lawn. Also, when the lawn is a litle bit steep, can you give some usefull information?
Best regards from Serbia

Keep the grass 4 to 6 inches high and the soil and grass will retain more water, be healthy, and it will be more difficult for weeds to grow.

My yard would take LOTS of work to get it to even grow weeds. As it is, nothing grows in the front yard. It's heavily shaded, and not even weeds will grow in most of it. Also, the "soil" is basically just clay with a tiny bit of dirt mixed in. Digging in it is very much a chore. I once rented a gas-powered, 2-man auger to dig a hole so I could move a tree. That auger even had trouble getting through that ground.

I fear making it so grass would grow would cost way too much.

Thatch is a pain in the A for St Augustine yards. I usually just mow extremely low in early March with the catch bag on. I use that brown dried thatch in my compost pile. Use scotts 3 day and mow every week raising the cut a notch every week until you have a 4 inch cut. Remember St Augustine yards do great when kept about 3 to 4 inches.

Thank you very much for your video. Since watching it, I have gradually learned a lot about lawn knowledge, which is very helpful. Only slowly did I realize that my lawn had been encroached on by Poa annua. The area is very large, and I always thought it was normal before. Now I would like to ask, how should I choose to replant grasses that are more ornamental according to your video. I am in Birmingham, the lawn is about 110 square meters, most of it is well lit, because there are trees around it, a small part is shaded. The soil drainage is relatively good, there is no water accumulation, and a small part has green moss, which I think is too acidic. Can you give me some advice on grass seed selection for my situation? Thank you so much.
