THAT is EXACTLY how I taught myself how to knit - 50 years ago! I'd tried the English style - many times - and failed each time, I believe due to a short right forefinger. Then I just watched some old ladies of my church knitting, for hours, then blundered along, apparently BACKWARDS, until I found a way to make things work!
I was pregnant with my first, and had desperately determined to knit my baby a blanket before he/she was born. Finished all the tie-off of loose ends during the afternoon of 18 June, 1970; the babe, a gorgeous, red-curly-haired girl child with "rosebud lips", arrived the next afternoon!

That’s how I taught myself to knit. Must be my Norwegian heritage shining through! It’s a very easy way.

Chopin to knit by? Excellent idea. I played this piece when I was younger. My hands are too crippled to even knit any more but I love to watch you knit!

Are you holding the tail of the working yarn against the fabric or the needle and how do you maintain that grip when you reach the end of the row?

Now I need to look at how it's held otherwise. This is how I naturally hold mine...

I knit the same way. So much faster than the way my mom knits she throws her yarn.
