I love that Wade is a stereotypical white guy but he’s voiced by a black guy

i’m late to the party but that scene where wade cheers on the athlete to help them do better actually kinda happened this year in baseball. trea turner was having a down year as a player in Philadelphia of all places, which is notoriously a harsh city to underperform in. Some fans got the word out that instead of booing turner they were gonna cheer extra loud for him when he went up to bat. It almost immediately turned his year around!

Elemental suffers from weak execution; for me, its emotional moments don't hit as hard as they do in many other Pixar films.

All anger is just vulnerable. Emotion in disguise.

No, it’s not. Anger is its own emotion. It can be fueled by other emotions like fear and pride. But it is not a cover-up all the time. People have righteous anger sometimes or sometimes people have understandable anger without a fear or something else

Wade was toxic in my opinion. He made Amber chase him through the entire city instead of just talking to her. He manipulated Amber into crying to win a silly game. Oh, and he also crashed her big event just to show how much he cares by showing he doesn’t care at all. I will admit he did give his life, but not really they didn’t have any other options.

my expectations for this movie were so low, but when I watched it with my boyfriend at home, I cried so much when Ember's father and her finally connected and came to respect each other. the advertising team really flopped on this gem of a movie.

This movie tore me up because I had just recently been through a breakup when I watched it. The line that literally made me pause the movie because it was just too much for me was when Ember and Wade talk about trying to touch each other and she says "I could vaporize you, you could extinguish me" and the line is so fast but it hit me so hard. Relationships threaten your identity. Loving someone could vaporize you. It could extinguish you. But you have to take the risk anyway.

My best friend and I are both 1st generation and the way we sobbed in this movie. The way we loved Wade's everything everyone facing their own internal prejudice to an extent and overcoming it, the bow. I immediately bought this movie bc it hit so hard

this movie simulates most real life stories about immigrations, starting a new life, and discrimination. although I wish life was much more romanisizing like this..this one is stronger than zootopia because the intolerance are viewed from the opressed minority perspective! i can relate to amber because I do have a temper, and seeing her makes me cry everytime because I am still dealing with anger management. i can totally relate to amber not going to certain places because racism!!! "my dad wanted us to go on an ice skii club, only the manager refused because of our accent!! i felt exactly like a black person during the 60s in America that should sit behind the bus!!!" ..up until now I wish I could try ice skiing....on a lighter note I did take some glass making classes and I can vouch that almost the artists made their homework while making this movie! although I wish I can magically manipulate molten glass like amber but its movie magic so..xp

I know you love and admire Pixar, but I think you're angry because your emotions are being manipulated. It's the same way we feel about manipulative abusive parents. Assuming childhood trauma.
Johnnie Mitchell said something like it is the grain of sand that creates the pearl.
Sometimes our messed up childhoods make us work to be good people, when those who had no adversity take their parents for granted and see no reason to improve on themselves. I don't know about you but all my memories are yellow and blue. It gives us a drive to connect with others on a profundity level. It's what makes us passionate artists. An thankful for that. 💛💙

I literally just watched it with my sister and my step mom, and we all had a very hard and tearful day so we spent the entire movie cry bonding, but THEN, the movie ends and they immediately DISMISS IT because "yeah it's cute but it's for little kids". SO WHAT ??? Can't you rejoice that the new generation gets to grow up with that kind of stories ???? I'm not into romantic movies, at all, but this one is somehow realistic and beautiful and perfect and I just got immediately taken away by it and cried so much... Which never happens... And it's not just the love story, it's the culture, the world building, the metaphors, obviously the immigrant story, the animation !!!! How can you dismiss such beautiful and hard work because you decide it should be watched by kids. How can you not see how little that means.

There’s a beautiful short little making of documentary on Disney+ where Peter Sohn (director and writer of this film) tells the story of why he wrote this and how it pulled from his life as a Korean American and as one half of an interracial marriage. It’s lovely. As a massive Disney and Pixar fan, I was absolutely delighted with this and Strange World. I don’t get why they commercially ‘flopped’. Excellent films. More original stories Disney/Pixar.

I really related to Wade when I saw this. But I found it interesting that you mentioned how secure he is. He mentioned that he slipped into a funk after his dad died, and then just went from one job to another. I think he does have some problems with not knowing where he is going. But you make a good clarification that he seems pretty secure otherwise.

This movie was so bad. What girl falls for a Man that cries all the time. This movie is a huge flop and I see why. Amber was a terrible lead for young girls. And hilarious that the fire elementals are discriminated against. They are fire. They destroy everything they touch. It's literally impossible for them to assimilate into their society.

One thing that really makes Wade a stand-up guy is that he does something that is so often lost today, which is that he listens. When he and Ember are on the beach, he just sits there a lets her express how she really feels and doesn't interrupt her at all. He sits in silence and just takes in what Ember is saying, rather than feeling like he has to get a word in at that exact moment. Wade understands that what she is going through is more important than anything he has to say.

The other thing worth noting is that during the scene when Wade is trying to get Ember to cry, as he begins to finally make that connection with her you literally see the light from her reflecting in Wade's eyes. It's a nice and simple way of signaling that a connection really is building between the two of them.

The movie really struck me because it didnt have a "villain" (or rather if it did its poor city planning and beurocratic red-tape since the inciting incident was there being water leaks in a non-water neighborhood and for SOME reason, its the business owner's, not the city's fault 🙄) but those ARE the kinds of challenges our human relationships face, its not a villain, its a circumstance and it makes it more real for me. My wife and I have really only ever weathered circumstances, almost NOBODY has to face a villain.

I would absolutely be godawful at the crying game. It takes a lot of effort for me to feel something emotionally. I cant really relate videos where people are so constantly (what looks like) bogged down by emotional processing to me (yet somehow say it's liberating).

The feeling you are feeling when connecting to a play, a book, or cinema is called an emotional release. That's why you feel what the characters feel. That's a hallmark of a great film, book, script, play.
