Existential questions have no answers by definition. Eternal fill in the blank scenarios.

Your words helped me a lot. I'm about to turn 28 and I've finally figured out what I like, and even though it doesnt seem like much impact, I still want to pursue it. I had a traumatic start to life and now I know that I need to start living and not just surviving in worry.

I always struggle with comparing myself to others in every sense. Especially with feeling left behind, feeling like I'm trash in comparison, not seeing my value, berating myself. It stops me from reaching my full potential.

Im constantly overstimulating myself with music, videos on in the background when doing cleaning, even when sleeping. Anything to avoid a peep at my inner consciousness lest it say cruel things to me. The content is not a problem, as its stuff thats educational and useful and not mindless, but I definitely abuse it to escape myself.

I might not be able to go on a long hike, but I will definitely detox and try to sit face to face with these thoughts.

Thank you.

The aim of life is to create the best new life (in my opinion). Focus all your energy towards raising kids - get a good job so you can look after your future kids, and live for them once you have them. Just a random 15 year old who works probably have committed suicide if I wasn't (not to brag here) a genius

You have to be insane to think that people can retire in their 50's... In the US politicians and corporate greed are ACTIVELY trying to raise the retirement age at all costs. These people have so much money that they are terrified at the idea of having to work ever again, so they do everything in their power to hold other people to horrible jobs so they and the people they deem important never have to waste their lives...

I feel people have lost meaning in their life mostly due to capitalism. I want to stress here what I mean by this is raw unfettered capitalism with pure and corrupt greed as the endgame. I have a strong feeling that if CEO's could, they would bring back slavery except at a business level. There is no empathy or morality with these people, they would gladly step on your fresh corpse if it meant they got one more share of stock in said large company. They 100% have lost all humanity and the dollar is their god.

This being said, that means that we, the working class, are beyond screwed. We are living on a perpetually worse planet and yet people are birthing kids out like it's going out of style, greed is rampant and EVERYONE is out to make sure they are out for themselves. There is no community, no sense of cohesion, everyone is full of greed.

At 54, recently divorved with grown-up up kids, and in a job I don't like ive found myself in a dark place and quite eager to get it all over with, like im twiddling my thumbs, waiting to die. I've gone back to smoking and drinking after 18 years without but still confident I will dig my way out and be stronger for it.
But then I think, what's the point? Going through all this crap just to die a stronger person?

Its Vipassana that u are talking about ! Classic buddhist meditation technique ! Also, part of oldest ancient teachings of ashtaang Yoga! No need to buy any course for happiness, its always been free! Problem with all these courses is they feel good when ur are doing them but wears off in some time and u get back to ur old self and habits! So its very very important to know ur dopamine triggers and fix them first!

(Male 27, MSc) honestly feel like my parents were living in a world or paradigm whereas they knew or had the feeling the world was developing and growing. With capitalist innovations (like internet and other luxeries) and moral development that should keep war out of the door etc... my parents ought to love eachother, take a job they like and then spent time with the kids and teach them how to live. On their part, they've done a greatjob.

Nowadays, especially if you tend to be more critical and don'tbuy everything that western leadership tells you.. we can obviously see a state of mindless civilians developing and the elites (like WEF etc) developing the agenda behind closed doors.

I have the feeling i can't change the future but at the same time i see a future developing which does not resonate with a first world worldview. Economy is at its best but it just end up in the elite pockets..

The world today is so strange, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to understand it but I do know what I want for myself. But no one else seems to feel the same way. I’m 20 now and I’ve never fallen in love, crushed on, dated, but what gives me peace is that someday I’ll find that. I don’t know how it’ll happen but my purpose is to find someone who I can spend life with, though everyone around me doesn’t agree and fools around making me seem like the loser. I know what I want which is some solace. I hope everyone here too can find what they were made for be it rancher or inventor.

This is the first time I’ve ever openly admitted what I want from life and I can only thank this video for making me do that. Thank you

I think I’d make an adjustment to the phrasing of “purpose cannot be given”.

I think it can be given, it cannot be forced onto someone though. Parents expectations can be a purpose if it is willingly accepted (albeit this can be a relatively shallow purpose, no wonder it doesn’t sustain for long).

An example of a given purpose would be the great commission in Christianity. I would say that is a “given” purpose in that it’s certainty external from the individual, however that can only sustain if the person willingly accepts it. Forcing that same religious purpose onto someone, even if they go through the motions and live religiously, is unlikely to be internalized where it can sustain that person.

I found purpose with the fire department. I had a mental breakdown and try to delete myself. A friend talked me into going to a FD event with him (it was a department cookout) just to get me out of the house. I saw a family, not a group of people hanging out. I saw a support system with a purpose. My first call was a elderly lady who just needed help getting off the floor and I knew from that moment this is where I belonged. My whole attitude towards life slowly started improving and now almost a year later I’m so much happier. All I needed was a purpose. A reason to live that wasn’t just because I had to.

But Asian American kids ARE doing better than other kids. I don't know why people say things like a "sense of purpose can't be given to you" when for 99.99% of human history that's exactly how purpose worked. Society gave it to you. The church gave it to you. Your tribe gave it to you.

As a korean child, I've been trained to do millions different things, and I even once believe I was toturing myself to live a successful life.

Now I'm close to 30. I have all kinds of knowledge and skills. But I don't know who I am, what I want, why I suffer. The skills I have are not me. Jobs I've gotten are not me. Expectations I've satisfied or failed to satisfy are not me. I can make a great argument, convince others, or help others with most problems. But I don't know how to speak to myself or listen to myself at all. My body exists in the reality and it can interact with the world, but my soul does not exist anymore.

This video insighted me, and I'm hoping I can now work on finding myself rather than hiding how empty I am with things that are actually not a part of me.

There's not a single word you said that I can't agree with. Especially about being disconnected of ourselves and the shower thoughts. It's been 3 months that I go to the swimming pool 2-3 times a week. And for 2 hours it's just my mind, my body and all my thoughts without anything disturbing me. I always feel so relaxed and more conscious after a session. And whenever I feel like social medias are taking my focus away too much. I go swimming the next to recenter my focus on myself

interesting point. My father was forced into early retirement, not much older than I am now. It almost killed him. He couldn't go back to work as he was paid off with insurance to top up his pension. He already had some alcohol dependency issues before (due to the pain from the ill health). The alcoholism increased, to the point my mother left him and he had nothing, you can see how the downward spiral went from there. He has sort of made it out the other side, but he still has major issues
