Kinda misleading, as "websites going down" generally has nothing to do with your ISP capacity. Its rarely a case of a big CDN not having capacity either, most outages are configuration glitches, DDoS or firmware/hardware failures.

I wouldn't even say its happening more often than it used to, its just when it happens it impacts far more services due to the use of CDNs. If a big CDN misconfigures their routers, then a huge chunk of the Internet goes dark which means more people are impacted and notice it.

Also, even if there was a lack of capacity (I don't buy that either), that wont usually take a site offline, just slow it down.

In fact, I feel like big game launches actually are less likely to be problematic than they were 10 years ago, as the CDNs are just so much more diverse than they used to be. Its usually the actual game servers that still get overloaded, as developers can really misjudge how many servers to spin up for launch (remember, each cloud instance costs money so they wont spin up more than they think they need), or not catch an issue during Beta that causes them to be able to service less users per server than they expected - or hit a bottleneck when spinning up more servers.

I get the feeling america is lagging behind on technology. Here in The Netherlands we don't have those simple problems anymore, guess we are 20 years ahead in infrastructuur. Or i missed something. I have to say i got fibre straight into my house, like most of The Netherlands, so maybe thats why it's more stable here.

You mentioned the last mile infrastructure not being up to snuff for today’s standards, you should do a tech quickie on the potential impact EV‘s will have on the power grade. my prediction for electric vehicle potential negative impacts is unless ut totally companies build more nuclear power plants and upgrade transmission and distribution infrastructure we will see large scale potential outages more frequently especially in the summer months when IVs are combined with running air conditioners. Also I think material shortages may get worse because not only at least in my area is there a huge new construction boom I’ve tracked housing and apartments but a lot of people who want to buy or bought an EV may need to make major changes to their electrical service, right now for example finding a meter socket or certain brands of breaker panel is just as hard if not harder than finding a PlayStation five

because the big tech doesn't pay its taxes as it should do, so good luck getting them to pay to upgrade the infrastructure

The biggest thing to realize here is that complete region outages are really rare.

A region of cloud services will usually be backed by multiple AZs, with each AZ being backed by multiple DCs. Most outages are single-AZ failures, and if services were provisioned and designed correctly to fallback to healthy AZs, customers would most likely not even notice these outages.

I have seen a lot of routing blunders the last couple years. Seems a lot of ASINs will just drop off the map or some upstream core provider will crap the bed and make many destinations inaccessible for hours. I have also seen far slower response times in data centers and greater network admin incompetence. Likewise too when there is an issue more places have less workers on hand or their off-hour response times are nonexistent where before they’d have some hands on deck 24/7

As for services, there’s more people out there overcomplicating their software stack because it’s the hip thing to do. They could have run a simple LAMP stack but now they’re flinging Docker and Kubernetes in places where it should never exist

Sure would be nice if I could BUY a DISC that had games one it, or could SAVE the game download files so they didn't need to be downloaded again, just the updates. Downloading installers and not complete sets of game files in permanent files is responsible for a lot of it. I find it infuriating to buy a DVD case only to find a keycode for a download. Look at the environmental waste, plus the flat lie. It's amazing how my GTA5 discs STILL WORK when I need to reinstall. Good Old Games lets me download permanent game install files, so it certainly can be done. Of course, with GOG it means I actually own the games, not just rent them like Ubisoft.

Real answer: Because the ISP's would rather spend 100mil on a politician who will get taxpayers to pay for their failure to upgrade their infrastructure. They will then take the decades-old hardware that they've been using and replace it with something that is only a decade old, and while better doesn't really fix the problem, because it was cheap but claim they got something brand new and keep the difference. (And congratulations that's how money laundering of tax dollars works.)

Why did offline internet never take off? each person has a tiny bit of the file like BitTorrent, so no one person has the data.

So your answer is basically lack of redundancy and bandwidth. Of your 229 seconds of video It took 129 seconds for the intro and sponsor, then 7 seconds for the outtro. That means this video is 59.4% fluff. This is borderline clickbait and may actually be a contributing factor at this point.

Just switched to fiber today - this is actually the first vid I’m watching with the new connection. I’m on the cheap tier with my new ISP so my down speeds are basically the same as I already had, if not ever so slightly better, but my upload speeds on the other hand are now symmetrical whereas they definitely weren’t before - not even close - so that alone is a huge upgrade for me.

5g is not a resolution for slow speeds we have had 4g for a long time and have not seen those speeds we had when it was first rolled out guessing the backend is too congested. And qos so they can serve people with newer phones faster speeds even if they just got a phone that’s been out for 2 years

This is mostly gaslighting, There is something bigger happening than what the media reports. Personally I think they are cyber attacks of some kind, and we’re possibly having a cyber war of some kind, but could just be rogue actors. Just look at the state of the world, and do you really think that Amazon or the others will really admit that they were hacked/attacked? I’m sorry but the frequency is too high for it to just be system congestion. And it’s not just down sites, it’s slow sites. Here’s another Theory (albeit much more unlikely)(tinfoil time) maybe the government is using massive amounts of computer resources for calculations of something, not that I think that they would need amazons infrastructure for it, they should have their own. But hey the gov has outsourced everything else (medicine, computer chips, etc.), so why not this too.

Also side note, this phenomenon has spiked 📈 more recently as the world keeps getting hotter around the collar, it’s hard to say that it just a coincidence. But hey what do I know 🤷🏻‍♂️, just something to think about and consider.

Keep all your IoT devices local; not only does it avoid contributing to this problem, it insulates you from its effects. Also it's better for security anyway.
That does mean however that a good 75% of devices on the market (and probably closer to 90% of the ones being heavily advertised) are unusable. But the sooner people realize this and stop buying these inherently flawed products the better.

I rarely have an issue with websites going down, but my ISP has had a service outage for going on a week now. If it weren't for my phone's wifi hotspot, I'd be going nuts and pestering my ISP every hour on the hour until they get it fixed already.

What's why web 3.0 is taking place. In web 3.0 the number of users is directly proportional to the number of slots available on the Internet, so hacking a specific server and overloaded servers won't be as possible as it is now + more important tracking user won't be possible as well, say goodbye to ads tracking users in web 3.0.

There also is a labor shortage in the trades. So no matter how good the technology gets. If the infrastructure is not updated or maintained then things go down.
I recommend more people go into the trades. Also governments shy away from shutting down electricity companies and there is always a job to be done.
