I cannot understand why the tamils were angered so much by sinhala being made the state language. Sinhalese make up over 70% of the population and Tamils only 28%. Fair enough. And nobody prohibited Tamils to speak and work in their language! It seems like they wouldn't protest so much if English (which is a far more alien language) remained the state language. So stupid!
It should be remembered that this was back in 1956, just 8 years after freedom from british colonialism which exploited both Sinhalese and Tamils to mercilessly. Making the language of the majority of the local population was a need of the hour! Banda did it and he should be given the credit for that.

Yeah, there were some glitches at his act but his vision was good if the Sinhala language wasn't named as the national language. The language would be extinct. But now so-called "intelligent people" oppose him because they did not like to lose the opportunities they gained with hierarchy.

SWRD wanted an independent Sovereign Nation State with the Sinhala Tamil and the Muslims speaking one language the language of the original nation like in UK with one flag and one National Anthem. Like the UK.

On the 24th of May 1944, Mr: J.R.Jayawardene, Member for Kelaniya, moved in the State Council: "That with the object of making Sinhalese the official language of Ceylon within a reasonable number of years this Council is of opinion: (a) That Sinhalese should be made the medium of instruction in all schools; (b) That Sinhalese should be made a compulsory subject in all public exams; (c) That Legislation should be introduced to permit the business of the State Council to be conducted in Sinhalese also; (d) That a Commission should be appointed to choose for translation and to translate important books of other languages, into Sinhalese; (e) That a Commission should be appointed to report on all steps that need be taken to effect the transition from English into Sinhalese". Mr H.W. Amarasuriya,Member for Galle seconded the motion.
Mr: V. Nalliah, Member for Trincomalee-Batticaloa proposed an amendment "That the words 'and Tamil' be added after the word ' Sinhalese' wherever the word 'Sinhalese' occurs", after which, this motion was carried, with 27 Ayes and 2 Noes. This is where the seeds were sown, and SWRD was forced to come up later with the Sinhala only act by those who were instrumental in bringing him into power.
I read somewhere, that on the day this piece of Legislation was to be presented in Parliament, some Buddhist monks with a few others who consisted of the Pancha Maha Balavegayathe were present at Mr: Bandaranaike's Rosemead Place residence to get his assurance that this bill will be brought up in Parliament on that day, and Mr: Bandaranaike while removing any doubts that they had about his intentions re: the bill, had reportedly told them that whatever happened hence would be their responsibility. Wonder whether this lady would clarify this.

My "concern" is the question it self ..he says the "clever left" but we are "left with others" ??. That a bit
unerring...left with others..is it the bad lot he is reffering to or the ???..the smart tamils and burghers...1st of all I
think we need to give equal respect for every SRI LANKAN. I think the guy who is asking the question is trapped in an false
illusion. The vestiges of our past still haunt us. Sad...
How do we differentiate between "clever/smart" and those on opposite side ? Ability to converse in english ? , have a cigar instead of chewing betel leaf ?
I think we got our diretions wrong...A village boy from Yatiyantota is today a top Nasa senior research scientist.
It was not the only cause when people have an opportunity they take it, its natural. It happens even now.
When European colonizers first reached the American continent the native language was not english.
Unlike in apartheid condiitions here in Sri Lanka we continued to use all 3 main languages .It remains to date.

SWRD was the cause off all downfall in the country. His act created devide and ethnic unrest. Sadly the country lost the best of the people where other countries benefited today. Sri Lanka would have been a different country today if not for his decision.

Yes, the Bandas (parents) made a mess of this Country but their children were never reluctant to correct it. In fact Chanrika is the only President who sincerely wanted put things right and still continuing with that but with little success. If only the UNP, bikkus and the LTTE supported her at that time

I have ALWAYS admired this lady for her sence of honesty. 💐💐💐SWRDB was reffered to as THE MUDDLER in an article in the Readers Digest published in the 60s... I was too young to understand what it was all about at that time. But years later when I was a teenager I had the opportunity to read the article...
