his love wasn't really unrequited: he himself lamented that every time he reached out to hug that youth, his reflection also raised his arms, and every time he bent down to kiss him, the other would do the same. he very much did think the reflection loved him back. he died because of the horrible realisation that his love could never be attained: for it was not another person, but himself, and he would never be able to meet him in skin and bones.

Funny how Echo means a sound repeating but gefting faded each time and her punishment was to repeat whatever someone else said

One version I heard was that when he was born the Oracle told his mother that he would live a long life as long as he never knew himself, so he never knew what he looked like but he was aware that he was beautiful and was a bit annoyed that that's all people loved him for, when echo meets him he is annoyed with her inability to talk to him and compares her to the others and he says something along the line of look at yourself which echo repeats and leaves and when he's near the pool of water he remembers echos last words to him and goes to the water and he falls for his reflection and because he never saw his own face he's convinced he's looking at some type of water spirit and after sometime he dies and it's revealed there were some nymphs (idk i cant remember) living in the water and they tell a forest nymph that they are sad that he's dead because they loved staring at his face and so the nymph turns him into a flower thus explaining why the flower looks like it's looking down near water

I've always heard that it was Aphrodite with Eros punishing him not Nemesis. Aphrodite blessed him with beauty, Echo falls in love with him because Eros shot her with a love arrow, he spits Echo, Echo runs to a cave and weeps creating a spring from her tears and some how becomes stone but still echos what she hears. Aphrodite and Eros punish him by shooting him with a love arrow as he sees his reflection. He drownes.
This is where I thought we got the saying "Beauty is a Curse." Or maybe in mythology beautiful people often become cursed.

There is another interesting version of the myth:
Narcissus doesn't actually know what he really looked like, until he sees himself in that pool. When he was born, his mother heard a prophecy, that her son would become a handsome guy and that he would be fine as long as he doesn't "know himself", which she interpreted as such, that he should never actually be aware of his beauty. So he would naturally be weirded out by everyone's behaviour towards him and not understand, why they're all so obsessed with him.
Sooner or later he would gather, that they find him handsome and junk, but he wouldn't really have a clue as to why. So when he sees his reflection for the very first time, of course he is completely stunned and probably doesn't even realise that this is his reaction he's staring at.
