In order for the ad to show, you need to run the app on a real device such as your android phone. I did some research on this and it won't show up on the android simulator on your computer, but on a real device it will.

I was able to insert the test banner and display calmly after seeing your tutorial, however, when inserting the banner ID that I generated on the AdMob website, it does not appear when running the app getting only the white space where the banner should be. I think you need to initialize with app ID not unit ID.
