And just remember, not everyone in Brazil likes carnival, me being one of these. I DON'T LIKE CARNIVAL. Actually a lot of my friends does not like it either.

The carnival in Rio de Janeiro has several types, the street carnival, with organized blocks, where people walk through the streets, wearing their own t-shirts, and they sing and dance and people follow, drinking and having fun! It is a freer carnival, without competition. Free and cheap fun!


The Samba School parades, on the other hand, are a big competition. Each samba school has more than 3000 members, who prepare all year long for the parade, which takes place in February. There is a lot of money invested, and the state invests money too because the return for tourism is great. The samba schools parade in their own place called the "Sambódromo", which is a large avenue with bleachers on both sides, lighting, box seats, etc. Each school chooses a "storyline" (a theme) and the whole parade follows this storyline, clothes, costumes, floats, front committee, "Mestre sala e porta-bandeira" (Master of ceremonies and flag bearer/ a couple that represents the samba school), the samba, the drums, etc., that are evaluated by a specialized jury and, in the end, the winning samba school is chosen! Ordinary people save money all year long to parade for their favorite school, which is "like their favorite soccer team"! Pedestrianizes parade and represent the school.

Yes, it's like a parade.. I had the opportunity to went to the Carnaval of São Pau,o in 2020. before covid and it was amazing! It started 22 p.m and ended 07 a.m. It works like a competition because it has many 'samba schools'. All the time they are being rated in everything and days later, the best ones are voted and the best one wins.
