How To Run Chrome OS Flex On Your Old PC or MacBook

I put Chrome OS Flex on my HP Elitebook 8460p and it ran great, I got the Acer 516 GE to replace it because of the lack of linux/android app support.

Chrome OS flex is does NOT revive ALL OLD LAPTOPS and PCs. YOUR PC NEEDS TO BE A 64 bit and NOT 32bit. I tried this on my OLD netbook HP MINI 311 and chrome os flex do not like it bc its a 32 bit.

Can anyome explain why you cold get an old PC or Mac that is 10 years old & more to work with Flex. But you can't get a 5 years old hp Chromebook to install Flex on it. Why Google is more interested to bring competitor equipment to Chrome then to keep ChromeBook customer happy ? Can anyone explain why Flex will not work on chromebook?

I got this working on 4 GB 2011 MacBook Air. It’s cool, but I’m not sure it’s any faster than running Mac OS and JUST running the browser. Are there any benchmarks out there to compare? At first I compared to MacOS running desktop apps, but should really compare to MacOS just running Chrome to be better comparison. Perhaps running Flex from USB slowed it down, but since I didn’t notice a significant speed increase it seems to me using this machine as a “browser only” device and having the optionality of using something from the heavy OS (just in case) makes me think I won’t do the full install. Any benchmarks that show my impressions are not correct?

I downloaded the Chromebook Recovery Utility on to the old laptop I plan on converting. Should I delete the extension before attempting the conversion?

I've got an old lenovo-ideapad-120s-11iap-8005 which only has 4GB Ram and 16gb SSD so I've installed Chrome OS Flex onto it to try to extend it's usefulness. It seems to work smoothly at the moment. I'll update you once I've used it for a while

chrome os flex is great as well for me I used my old mac book air 2011 with 64 gig work very well and fast all my drivers works as well which is awesome

Thanks for this super helpful video. However I am at a dead end. After installing the Chrome OS Flex, it is not able to populate available Wi-Fi networks. I have tried manually entering SSID and Password but doesn’t work. Therefore I cannot move ahead with setting up or conducting any operation. I’ve checked that the Wifi chipset in my HP laptop is not in the unsupported list mentioned by Google. Please suggest a workaround or other ways I can tackle this issue. Will be of great help!

Here's my opinion after using Chrome OS flex for 1 month:
1. Battery life extended by some 3-5 hrs. I don't know what to say. Literally my laptop was running out of charge as quickly as possible in Windows after 2 hrs.
2. The OS is extremely useful as my lappie is really fast (and it is 5-6 yrs old. Also it does not support Windows 11)
3. I'm able to run software like LibreOffice after enabling Linux desktop environment. Also I've installed a coding app as well.
4. I saved a couple of bucks to avoid an upgrade to SSD.
5. No crashes, No issues (might be because my laptop might be one among those laptops which are expected to function without even any minor issues. I was unable to locate its name in the list but the laptop model is still supported I guess). But a few apps I'm unable to install like Spotify. But I've got a web extension with that.
6. The OS is quite good but there are still stuffs that people might need to do like as I said before I'm unable to install all Linux apps. Also bluetooth is kind of not working. But still ports are functional. So that's more than enough as I never use Bluetooth.
7. My laptop crashed out in Windows a whole lotta times when I used coding apps and even for simple stuffs. But now, its not like that at all. Just a quiet and clean experience.

Things that might make this OS a complete blockbuster:
1. Google Play support.
2. Allowance of installation of all Linux based apps.
