Amazing footage.

Sorry to say, the first fly ever was by the Brazilian Alberto Santos Dumont, 2 years earlier, in 1906.

I wonder if this is any of the footage when Lt. Thomas Selfridge was killed in 1908 while flying with Orville.

Sad thing is that if human invent wonderful things they surely use it in millitary purpose killing in mass.

I wonder, what was the first Wright model to be able to take off without a catapult?

Seeing this in color & smooth video just seems to add more ‘life’ to the grainy, black & white herky-jerky footage we’re used to seeing. Truly amazing what mankind can accomplish if we just flush out the nonsense.

And this is were the rail industry started to die.

This film is so cool . the other thing is they also invented the catapult system to slingshot the plane into the air " Catapult systems are being built today on modern Aircraft carriers . the Wright's were ahead of there time. But the Balls it took to not only fly one but to sit beside the guy flying it . Wow.

It was the only plane in the air that day in the entire world.

Transportation was mostly powered by horses by 1900, at that time children ran out of their homes to watch an automobile to go by; by 1920 they ran when an airplane passed by on the sky, by 1950 when a helicopter, then by 1960 when a jet airplane. In the 1970s, when I was a child, we ran to watch a horse carriage. Today, kids don´t give a sht, they´re busy looking down watching whatever sht is there in the hand mirror they always carry with them.

If you could only travel back in time and tell them 2 simple things: "a little dihedral and move the elevators to the tail...."

Sorry to be critical of your efforts, after speed correction and editing, but I must say colorizing really doesn't work. Footage would be better served by enhancing crisp black details, and removing steaks and spots. Couldn't AI do that?

Don't want to burst your bubble, but in Munich Museum is a picture of the first airplane in 1899 .... 4years before the Wrong/Wright brothers .... when I saw that I was so angry that I was lied to ....

truly amazing footage indeed. I was at the memorial on the OBX just 2 weeks ago and its seems some segments of this footage are from Kitty Hawk. Am I correct ?

Fist was in 1906, by Alberto santos Dumont,a Brazilian pioneer.

This colourised version of this old, familiar bit of film is nicely restored and enhanced. Thank you.
However, it does not depict the Wrights’ “First Airplane Flight”. What it depicts is the demonstration to the U.S. Army of their latest airplane, “The Wight Military Flyer” in September 1908 at Fort Meyer in Arlington, Virginia.
The Brothers’ first attempt at powered flight (their 1903 airplane did not/could not rise out of ground effect and thus was a powered, forward-traveling hovercraft) famously took place on December 17, 1903, five years before the event herein was filmed. Their first actual powered flight did not take place until September 1904 at Huffman Prairie, Ohio when their second design, much modified and with a more powerful engine, rose above ground effect and flew in a circle for the first time in history. This was the true flight of a powered, human-piloted airplane.
Cinema, invented in 1995, was already thirteen years old by the time of this film, and was rapidly becoming more and more sophisticated.

Remarkable clarity and detail in a very important bit of film footage. You can see that the width and pitch of the propellers is a lot larger than usual which creates more thrust. Orville jerks the flier up off the launching rail and then pushes the nose back down to keep speed up. Really steep turns for wing warping and two aboard. Six strong men are needed to pull the catapult weights up which demonstrates how much force was needed to launch the airplane. The 4K transfer makes it possible to see details clearly and the longer segments are really helpful.

Orville & Wilbur Wright are my cousins from my Dad's side of the family. My other cousin from my Mom's side of the family is Brig. Gen. William ( Billy ) Mitchell the Father of the U.S. Air Force. I now can say not only did my cousins invent the plane, but also showed how to properly use the plane. Pretty Cool in my book !

This was the Wright Flyer 3 and was a vast improvement over the first 2 models. The Wrights increased the performance and reliability of the engine, increased the size of the various control surfaces which gave better handling, and instead of the pilot laying prone, they added a seat so the pilot could sit upright. The entire airframe was made stronger.

These 2 men were the only human beings flying at that moment in the entire world. Noone can do that now. Theres 1000s of humans flying as you read this.

Airships were making powered, long distance flights long before this. The Wright Flyer was an impressive achievement to be sure, but not nearly as landmark as we are taught in school.

In the grand scheme of things, this was only yesterday. Are we really as advanced as we think we are, and what are our limits?

Which technology is more impressive, the airplane, or the camera that gave us this footage all these years later?

It’s even crazier to think that 4 years after this the titanic would happen
