"Heat Pump" is a nice way of saying "Every room heater and air conditioner" which raises costs. Sure these are a few grand each, but add them to every room needed and you got a disconnected system that costs 2-4X as much as traditional AC/Heating anyway. Let's be real, it's just a way for money to be made off cooling each room of your house.

In Australia, it's called 'Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner'. (not a Heat Pump)
And they've been here for decades.
And split system (non ducted) reverse cycle air conditioning (heat pumps) are very common

Come on Vox, you guys talk to theworld, not just the USA. You can check that on YT metrics... Since you use a term common to only USA and/or Canada it can make things quite confusing. Even more on this subject, since the person interviewed also state that "heat pump is one of the worse names of all times". I was confused on how this is different to what we call AC... For exemple, here this device is know by "Hot and cold AC". If I call it "heat pump" around here people will understant that this is an AC with only hot mode.

The nost ironic part of the name is they seem to actually work best for cooling since they are less efficient at freezing temps. They will still work tho.

“Properly” priced, lol, that’s an unsubtle way of implying that a carbon tax should be imposed on it. That’s not pricing but tax policy, don’t conflate them.

It is funny how no one talks about why we pipe condensed gas to the inside of the home. Instead of cooling down glycol and using a low pressure coil that is far less likely to leak. The high pressure could be contained in the outside unit like a pool heating unit that does this very thing.

A heat pump has a four way reversing valve. Which switches between cooling and heating mode ! R410a the refrigerant we use boils at -47.5c when open to atmosphere. In a heat pump system, the system is sealed so the boiling point is different none the less it’s that boiling of the refrigerant that move heat from one place to the other.
Cold weather heat pumps efficiency drops drastically as the outdoor temp drops. And typically heat pumps have a better seer rating than conventional air conditioners making them cheaper to run electricity wise. Heat pumps are old technology becoming the future of all of our cooling needs . It won’t be long until all air conditioners are replaced with heat pumps

Did he just imply cooling is inexpensive compared to heating? Or burning fossil fuels is inefficient for heating? Does he even know about the electric bills of hot countries? The absurdity boggles my mind. Where do you think that electricity comes from? Heat and Light! They are most basic forms of energy. They are THE MOST EFFICIENT if you can harness them directly.

In India. Heat pumps are the only ones you find, as we never had a need for heating over the year. It's called Air conditioners. It costs 300$ a piece for a heatpump for a single room.

This ain't ever gonna happen unless it endangers the life of rich and influential people. Because they are the ones who have the power to change the laws of society. For example, ozone layer depletion was a crisis that rich and influential people couldn't escape. Look how fast they acted and passed international laws to ban the use of products that depleted it. At the same time, these very same people knew about the influence of using fossil fuels and plastics in the 60s on global warming and the environment yet. We still can't pass laws and implement them.

I am cooling and heating 200 square meters house for less than 90 EUR/90 USD per month in Bulgaria, where 1 kW of power costs 0.12 USD/EUR.
I am using a heatpump and I still can't believe how cheap it is. It costed 12,000 USD/12,000 EUR, but I mostly pay like 70-80 EUR/USD per month.
If you can, buy it!

In Europe, these are very common in more rural areas. On summer days, they can use up all the excess electricity solar panels are producing and even in the winter, they are still way more effective and climate friendly than other types of heating, especially in countries with a lot of hydro or aeolic power. In cities though, the "coolest" new tech in town is sending a cold coolant through the heating grid and thus providing cooling remotely, especially for commercial and public buildings

😕Doesnt a traditional AC unit do the same thing by, drawing in warm air in winter from the outside using no Natural gas. While also cooling in the summer using refrigerants and coolants. Heat pump sounds just like a different term to call an AC unit 😆

My parents had a heat pump in the early 80s. It warms and cool. Moving to the U.S. I was amazed that heat pumps are not the known here. Also, for those with basements, you could pump the cool air from the basement to the upper levels with a simple little fan.
