I’m in the UK and only encountered such a brake over 40 years ago in a friend’s sister’s foldable bike. Maybe the reason was the folding thing because the whole mechanism could be kept to the back half. I think that 99% of people here are unaware and this is the first time I’ve heard a name for it. Stupid, isn’t it? For all the reasons you point out.

Seat height is the guage?
Equip the bike with a long seat post. And a short one.
Or a two piece seatpost that the consumer can shorten at home.
Solved. Much cheaper and easier than an extra wheel.

My BMX bike from almost 4 decades (Australia) jjjago when I was at high school has coaster brakes with no redundancy. I only installed 2nd hand calipers on the front wheel when I was an adult!

I don't disagree with the basic point, but to my mind this isn't even the biggest issue involving coaster brakes. The bigger problem, to me, is that in North America hardly anyone sells new bikes for adults with coaster brakes. There is, of course, a reason for this. In Eurasia and Africa, a bike is primarily a means of getting around, but in North America most people see a bike as a recreational device. And coaster bikes are far better for commuting than rim brakes (essentially zero maintenance, and good enough for the street in virtually any city other than places like Vancouver or San Francisco), although I agree they're far inferior for recreation. The thing is, if you want to get people riding bikes, the first priority should be getting people to ride bikes as a way of getting somewhere, and Eurasian style utility bikes with coaster brakes (sometimes combined with hub gears) are perfect for that.

The first Harley Davidson motorized bicycle 1901 had a coaster brake that was was a new departure with a washer design but all the newer coaster brakes have a wish bone design that can lock up and are dangerous mabe ok for kids bikes going 5 mph but nothing faster . V brakes are the best and the whole wheel is the disc . disc brakes suck the pads are expensive and the rear gets contaminated by chain oil .

Coaster brake contributed to IKEA's "Slada" bike being withdrawn and customers given their money back. Turns out, used in combination with Continental's belt drive system, also a feature of "Slada" bikes, the brake could break the belt. Some injuries had resulted.
Big shame. The bike was otherwise excellent, and cheap... and no, I do not know why the bicycle could not be converted to chain drive.

It was funny listening how coaster brakes are the most reliable brakes, when my worst biking experience is related to them.

I was 7, driving through the neighbourhood with friends. There was a road crossing on which we were planning to turn right. I started braking and BAM coaster break shattered, pieces flying in the air, sending me with straight into old lady (80+).
I will never forget that scene, old lady with hands full of groceries flying face forward on the asphalt. Shocking scene to a 7 year old.

I always hated coaster brakes on kids bikes. Never knew it was because of a law, though.
The first thing a kid does when panicking is take their feet off the pedals, and try to use their feet to stop.
Hate coaster brakes almost as much as training wheels, and try to dissuade people away from both.
Love your videos, Seth, both as a mountain biker, and a fellow parent.

I burnt through the rear tire of my bike I had when I was a kid because of the coaster brake. It was so scary pedaling backwards since the wheel would lock and I would fishtail. As a kid, you had no idea how to control a fishtail like you would as a teen or adult. As soon as I got my first free hub bike, I loved it so much more. It was smoother, faster, and nice to be able to even out my pedals. Not to mention safer by a mile.

I’m a retired professional Motocross/Supercross racer. BMX was always a big part of my training & my adolescence. So, I got hurt 20 years ago, had to stop riding motorcycles, BMX too… and in the early 2000s, I bought a Haro Mirra Flair 540 at a yard sale for $10… but it was missing the top GYRO cable, so, weeks later I went to a bikeshop, purchased a top Gyro cable & I said to the guy working there “I’m starting to see disc brakes on mountain bikes, I’m surprised I don’t see them on any BMX bikes yet” & he said “there’s not a lot of really beefy BMX hubs” & I said “Except Coaster Brake hubs” and he looked at me stonefaced & said “Coaster Brakes stop…why would you put disc brakes on a bike with a coaster brake?!” & I explained my position as a kid who grew up with a 1996 DYNO Air bicycle, which means GT Mag Wheels…the problem with that being friction from brake pads makes the braking surface of the mag wheels wear increasingly
more smooth & friction (and thus stopping power) decreases proportionately…so my bike never had brakes which worked well….

My first mountain bike had a coaster brake. It was a late fifties Schwinn Tiger 🐯 with aloy wheels (2.125 ×26 bmx/ cruiser tires snake skins), a Tange TRX cruiser fork and low rise bmx bars. It was 1981. And yes I went off road with it although we didn't have mountains ⛰ just big hill , two track loging roads and some single track hiking trails that didn't have heavy use. Eventually I made it a 10 speed with bmx brakes in 1984 ish .

This reminded me of when I was a kid in the late 70's early '80s and only road bikes with pedal brakes, one of my older brothers let me ride their friend's 10-speed, and the hand brakes and gears scared me when I tried to stop and the back tire came up. Never wanted to ride a bike with hand brakes ever again. Now that I'm older and was thinking of getting a bike for fun and exercise a bit, having a hard time finding a bike with just back breaks and not all the gears, besides the cruiser things.

Lets keep in mind too how dangerous coaster brakes are in the aftermarket motorized bicycle community too, whether it be a bolt on electric kit, or a gasoline powered conversion such as the one I have.

I've seen videos where the coaster brakes simply lock up out of nowhere due to being driven at speeds far higher than they were ever intended to go, which means the pedals suddenly go from stationary to spinning several hundred RPM in the blink of an eye. Huge safety hazard and I have seen people been thrown from the bike that way. Even my cable driven disc brakes are just BARELY good enough when youre doing 70kmh on a bicycle, and even then I've had a few "code brown" moments.
