The Machinations of myhouse.wad (How it works) - Part 3

Phenomenal job analyzing this! I've seen many game analyses and I think this has been the most thorough. Loved every second!

Funfact about the author: when people tried to figure out their identity, they eventually communicated a message saying "you guys found everything, and it's incredible, and I'm so proud. Please don't doxx me."

I dont know what's more impressive, the WAD itself or the entire concept of the WAD. This would be far easier to make in other engines I am sure, but the fact it's Doom just adds to the creep and wow factor in so many ways.

It adds to the mystery of just wondering, but not figuring out the mystery. Although sadly i already spoiled myself, but its none the less awesome.

Apparently Veddge's ex-wife's TikTok was found, where she made a few comments about the map, like that Pumpkin Rick and chugga chugga horse horse are in-jokes among the author's social circle. She ended up de-listing the videos, however. Probably because it was getting to be more drama than she wanted to deal with.The Doomworld posters also dug up some other private details about Veddge, which led to the original thread being closed for a while. Any posts that try to violate his privacy are taken down now.

My favorite part of this map is the ancillary material subtly pointing players to the correct path for the the best ending. It's vague enough that it doesn't hold the player's hand but specific enough that it becomes a puzzle in and of itself.

Super surreal seeing someone analyze code I wrote and do it with such solid understanding.

Part of me really appreciates the fact the author of this has stayed pretty much anonymously (aside from that one part on TikTok before it was taken down) even in this era of social media presences, but another part of me really wants to hear their thoughts on how they developed and got inspired to go THIS hard for how detailed and intricate even things like mere paintings on a wall moving around or the enormous amounts of line teleporting.

This is the greatest Doom mod to ever be made, and it's likely going to stay that way for a very long time, maybe even forever. The level of detail is absolutely staggering, and the stuff it does is completely unprecedented. I really wish it'd sparked a revolution in the mapping community and encouraged them to start making myhouse-likes, but this map was clearly such a monumental undertaking (hell, it may have actually taken the author 17 years) that it's likely that most mappers won't even touch the idea of making this with a 39-and-a-half-foot pole, and the ones that are insane enough to try likely are nowhere near done with their maps.

Plus, myhouse really was lightning in a bottle. I don't know how effective any imitations could ever be. That being said, I still hope it encourages the community to start pushing the bounds of what you can do in a Doom map.

Despite eveything the mod does, all the maze solving, diversions, horror, midfuckery, the ending is peak Doom. Fighting your way through a horde of monsters.

I've seen several people claim that the true beach is the proper ending of the game. I think it's probably the best ending, but I maintain that the gravestone is the "truest" ending.

You stated that you didn't know a route that would put you in the Realty field from the exit door. You can however still go into the Backrooms after the house has been sold, leaving you to return back at the sold house.

These videos were so good dude, partially because of the effort that went into the map, but just as much the effort you've put in here, i'm dying for thorough content about content just like it but nothing like this exists outside this, doom is otherwise simple, this map turns it on its head and its gonna be a long while before we see something this creative again with the state of everything else in the world. i hope the creator reveals all some day.
Tiktok has the answers for those who want (more or less) the entire thing told, for eg, the A in the heart has revealed themselves. ask yourself if you want to uncover the last shroud of mystery before you look tho, but honestly, the most mysterious song on the internet will keep you covered even if you do discover all the truth about this map and story.

Okay quick mention for everyone who’s impressed with this, pretty sure there’s a full survival horror game being developed in GZDoom, or already has been. Can’t remember the name but really shows how far the game has come.

That was an amazing rabbit hole to go down. I've always loved non-Euclidian geometry stuff like Antichamber or Manifold Garden but Myhouse.wad goes far beyond what those two games ever do by making you question your sanity.

You should have talked about the brutalist house teleport and weird figure over the window, and the segret megasphere in one of the windows.

Also you can softlock yourself with certain specific routes, which force you to do only the burning house route, and sometimes even through the reset in the boiler room

Can't believe I'm about to watch two hours of this but it beats playing it.

I had gotten around the "anti-cheat" by using doom2.wad as a base then replacing map01 in that doom 2 wad and adding back all the MyHouse textures. I was able to use cheats after that.

While I would admit such extent of reality warping line portal trickery was probably unheard of prior to myhouse, the overall idea of a house turning more sinister and macabre behind your back with silent adjustments really reminds me of a wad called Unloved.

The hospital part always reminded me of the hospital in Courage the Cowardly Dog

I love how even the programming is filled with odd choices and redundant actions, as if the design itself is some how part of the houses mind twitting reality.

Just a reminder that modern devs are struggling to make anything creative or engaging while using toolsets as evolved as Unreal Engine. Meanwhile this modding team built a masterpiece out of sticks and stones.

The line "identified the various points we could land after jumping out of a plane" with such a monotone voice is absolutely fantastic
