I wanted to make a difference as a nurse in my first year of 2020, I found that how heavily politics was involved with the field and how decisions are made only around money. I quickly shifted to working smarter, I feel bad about many things but I adjusted to the field and have avoided burnout. Although I still have time lol

Thank you for sharing this. I too have left the bedside after a few years of being used and abused. I agree with everything you have said on here. I've come from 2 previous careers and entered the nursing field in my early 40's. I too thought that I was going to help patients improve and make a difference, but you can't help people who just won't help themselves. There were times when I was told by patients to mind my own business or "don't judge me" when I was trying to educate them on how to improve or outline a plan toward recovery. I was told to "just do your job" like my job was to just push the pills and clean their mess.

I left patient care and capitalized on my previous work experiences combined with my nursing education. I now work in medical research, and medical consulting for a healthcare technology company, which pays more and I have more time at home with my family and friends. Nurses with years of experience should capitalize on their knowledge. There are lots of jobs out there that will gladly pay you your worth and treat you like a human being again.

I found nursing toxic and due to clash with a newly appointed deputy manager making allegations against me trying to cover up her errors and incident and failed communication with me as nurse in charge of my unit. It was untenable and I was forced to resign, constructive dismissal it's only been a month. Couldn't sleep, eat, flare up of severe IBS diverticulitis. My nursing union supported me with sound advice from their Employment lawyers. I'm sleeping again now, eating and getting my life back since leaving my last recent nursing post. It's real it's a toxic environment to work in, unhealthy in all respects

Not being rude or demotivating... I joined my nursing school 2months back nd I'm literally suffering, where it is mandatory to stay in Hostel nd follow their rules and i lost interest in this day by day and most of the people encouraged me and still couselling me to stay here as it'll has very good nd great salary nd job opportunities but please help me out I'm so stuck. All I feel is so loneliness and no interest at all in this course. But they'll not pay the money back and i had a lot of dreams before but all got ruined because of my this decison

Management needs a over hall
U cant b the type of nurse that will pl and or not talk back to the charge nurse. Document the issue and or call the hospital change nurse record the conversation and get a good lawyer and the labor board. Plus if a change nurse doesn't something she pr he suould have not done they can b held liable. Nurseimg is for the strong not the week. To many nurse o see don't nonjow to manage there time on the floor. Or do personal care on a patient. To many nurse become nurse for the money. Reality sets in. I am nirse and o love ot. I don't talk shit from any one. Its so important to become a nurse aide first to see uif i can handle it
Because u will learn a lot. U will learn how to Hussle.

Sounds counter productive. We know enough from studies that breaks and less work increase workplace productivity and quality of work. Maybe if they didn't force such bad working conditions they would have more people to schedule. They created a self destructive loop.

Hi. I struggled with these issues when I was nursing in the 1980s. I left nursing for a short while and my health, particularly my mental health, improved. I went back while raising my children, but casual work only unti I retired. This gave me more control of my life and work. Unfortunately the same issues and problems continue, and the health system never fully addressed them or does much to fix them. It is sad that younger nurses are still struggling and are still being taken for granted by the system. I live in Australia, and unfortunately we have the same issues as you in America. I hope you find a job that helps you balance your ife.

im 17 and going into uni and i was thinking about doing nursing but ive been hearing all this stuff and it seems like nurses are just the lowest priority in hospitals and that they get treated horribly, im not sure what to do because i dont want to get into the trap of working a shitty job and neglecting my home life but im not sure what other career options would help me not fall into that trap.

any advice?

Kudos to those sticking it out. Unless you've been in the trenches, you don't get it. Good luck to the younger generation who is getting out.

I'm a nursing student, and even though I love nursing and Im still a student nursing drains the hell out of me, and the toxic environment that clinical rotations give me is not "giving", Maybe in the future I might just consider myself a clinical instructor or a professor if I can't handle it anymore.

Jay, I am a male RN. I have been in this profession for 3O yrs. I was in your exact situation as a new graduate nurse. I came very close to leaving the nursing profession. The best advise I can offer you is don't throw away all of your training. I found bedside nursing in the hospital to be the most stressful worst possible working conditions out there. Initially I left that position and went into home health care. It had its share of stress but nothing like bedside nursing. Eventually I found an out patient clinic position that was very stress free and fulfilling. And finally I went into case management where I had no direct patient care but instead used all my knowledge to navigate patients through our crazy health care system. Wishing you much success as your professional life journey continues! 💙
