Well, I banged around last night, followed a couple of other tutorials and probably nearly developed this 'technique' on my own, but this is a definite plus to see in this moment. I especially like that he suggested blending different effects because this is what I arrived at after disappointment with pencil sketch alone. I got a 'painting' effect layer between and voila`! Selective masking, layers and modes, little color adjustments and I'm off to the races! Thanks again!

Bartz - I happened to see a tutorial earlier that might help. I can't add links here, but search for "Kicking the Tires with G'MIC filters in Gimp 2.8" and see if that can get you started.

Thank you. I just added G'MIC today and am blown away and need some examples of how to utilize. I'm still doing something wrong, but I have better ideas now.
