Bikes, Cycling & Gender: A Discussion with Frit Tam

All things being equal, a step-over bike is much stiffer than a step-through bike. If you ride classic steel frames back-to-back, the difference is dramatic, especially at high speeds. Newer bikes that don't use off-the-shelf tubing are designed to work around this problem, so the only difference is maybe a little extra weight.

This was really awesome and inspiring! You guys have such great chemistry. So sorry that I missed the livestream! I'll definitely follow the podcast as well! Even being gay (and thus being primed on how it feels to be different than what is perceived by other people) I feel like I don't know nearly enough about what it means to be trans. Looking forward to learning much more about this both through your podcast and in general, and to follow your journey in the months and years to come.
Also a great analysis of why it feels so awesome being on a bike! It's not easy putting it in words but both of you hit the nail on the head there!

Didn't join for the live stream as it was my 60th birthday - celebrating with watching my daughter at dance school. Great to hear Frit Tam. I'm a Londoner, but up North now - near where you started the ride. If you find your way up here again, we could look at getting you to talk to our high school media students, or a wider student talk? It's a beautiful place to ride.

So are you welcoming to people like me from the H community (heterosexual)? I mean, I just like riding my bike on rail trails, riverwalks and such. Is it OK if I watch you just for bike content…or does this have to be about sex? Because I’m interested in the cycling part…but I’m not interested in who you sleep with. That’s personal, private information. Just like I don’t want to talk to you about who I sleep with. It’s none of your business. But cycling can be everybody’s business! I’m guessing you’re not going to agree. OK, I’ll show myself out…

Agree...online bike buying is a nightmare. I have a step-through frame as I have ataxia and can't swing my leg over without falling over. I don't even think about it now. The ability to get on my bike (with tent, panniers, etc) on the back far outweighs the apparent 'look' of swinging over. My son, 17, a true Gen'zer thinks swing over frames are stupid...we have hope.
