Apple has so much money, it doesn't even matter. They'll fight till they win, or give them a miniscule portion of their revenue to shut them up.

DEI hires for appearance over talent. The tech industry is rife with DEI evangelists. Is it any surprise so many tech companies, their products and services are getting worse over time?

I created the Lycos search engine.

My great regret is that someone else created SEO, whose only purpose is to mutate the search results for nefarious purposes.

As Grant Imahara used to say, "This is why we can't have nice things".

Wait... making information determined by profit and not inherent value is BAD for a system built entirely off the spread of information?!

Almost like Capitalism is bad for the human condition.

I believe AI may help with fixing this issue. If there is so much information out there, to a point where websites have to Search Engine Optimization, then artificial intelligence may help with sifting through all that data to find the relevant information to what you were searching for.

I don't think this is an issue of marketing, just an immense amount of information. Thus, people will have to come up with a new way of searching the web. AI tailored to our personal way of sifting through everything online. Then finds all of the relevant articles, videos, and so on. Don't like the results? Think the information is inaccurate? Then you tune it, but in a way that is intuitive to the person using the AI.

I believe this is what the solution will be. The problem is, are you going to make it harder to develop this AI for many to compete, or will you restrict it and make it harder for anyone, but large corpos, to compete. Will you alllow the government, the rulers of the people, to restrict what your AI can and cannot search for?

Likely, it's just going to be a new internet. A different one from what we currently know. Kinda like how it was before mass adoption and the creation of the internet.

I am a professional technical writer... I receive MANY offers to work with SEO. I always refuse it and make it known how disgusting SEO is to me. SEO is the "art" of writing as little content as possible while tricking people into wasting your time. SEO is a plague. SEO is evil. SEO is wrong. I would rather be broke and homeless than take part in this disgusting industry.

Wikimedia is drenched in money, so it's wasting it on unproductive projects, conferences and funneling it to companies of relatives and friends. What it's not spending money on is improving its software and toxic community, such as hiring experienced professionals in tech and community building. Although it pays a lot of wages, that doesn't go to those who work hard. It's a corrupt system built around free money, that is donations for not doing much. Don't waste your money on it.

I've noticed this over the last 2-3 years. All I get anymore is ads, products to buy, AI junk, and pinterest links. I literally end EVERY google search I make these days with -pinterest to get even close to decent search results. Wiki has gone from "don't cite this" in its early days to "you're more likely to get correct and well-written information here than most places" today. I donate every year.

Greed has ruined the internet. Big Tech has ruined the internet - the internet was once a vast, new, unique, quirky, extremely variant in its expression and now the internet has turned into nothing more than one giant corporate billboard for advertising built with bootstrap cookie cutter UI/UX - an internet that is used for addiction to bolster sales - an internet that is now used to invade your privacy and monetize your data - its because of the 'freemium' business model. The internet is almost wholly a business now and it has lost its innocence (for those of you who remember dial up)

It can change - its just that people have to be willing to look for good platforms that are built in the spirit of the neophyte internet - where END USER DIGNITY is paramount.

I miss two things from the “old web”: web rings and directories. Remember when you could go to altavista and browse the entire internet by categories? Not only that, by browsing the tree-like structure, you could find out about stuff you didn’t even know existed. And web rings, you could go to a geocities website made by a real person with real content, and then just hit “next” to find the next website on that same subject. Oh, and search engines actually gave you results that were useful. And then, you could browse all the way to page 40, and find only useful stuff. And results were reliable, you could tell someone “I found this link on page 13 with xyz as the search string”. I would trade the current internet for that old one in a heartbeat.

omg, I have been telling people about this for almost a fucking decade and everyone was telling me I'm crazy
Since 2015 there was a steady decline of search quality. Back then the result you were looking for was in top 3 links. Over few years it shifted to having to go scroll through multiple pages of results to find what you asked for. Now, you not only do not get what you look for but often you'll see repeated results from the same sources over and over again.

What I find is that more and more I am resorting to use AI such as ChatGPT to find information, if it can't get me what I need it at least gets me in the ballpark and I can usually find it from there. I have a feeling that this is going to be the case for more and more people, especially as the internet continues to degrade and AI gets better and better.

Can you talk about how MS Teams spell check cannot correct Double consonants or double vowels. For example: apparently if spelled like aparently, will return appropriate, Apart, Asymmetric. Only with endings of ed, ly, ing... will the word show in the spell check. like looked. Now Teams will not spell check words period.
