Life in the northern wilderness of North America is not like a romance novel. It’s a tough life even with modern creature comforts. He should have had more respect for the locals and their advice. Cocky and arrogant, he got taught a deadly lesson.

You have no skills for wilderness camping. You have no skills for living off the land. You have never been to Alaska. You have no equipment, no food, no supplies. But let's go to Alaska in the winter to play boy scout. Not very smart.

when I was fifteen years old, I got myself involved in school bullying and unhappy family relationships. I thought my real life is meaningless and became addicted to book reading and self thinking.I want to got out of control from society. It was at that time I saw this movie. I also regard freedom as my “lifelong” belief. But being twenty years old now, I realize it was not for the freedom but for escaping from those damages from real life. However I still love this silly boy and his story. Just like he said, if life was determined only by rationality, it will be meaningless.

So let me get this straight.... he gives away $24,000.00 that's in his savings (I can understand not caring about money but if that was the case why even bother working and wasting all of that time earning the money and saving it in the first place if you weren't even going to use it and give it away anyway on top of wasting all that money getting a college education when you weren't ever going to use your degree but whatever), literally burns what little money he has left on him after that (which is crazy considering he claims to "love" nature so much but destroyed money that was made from cut down trees essentially making the tree that was cut down in vain but whatever), continues using his car (despite knowing that you have to pay for gas and sudden repairs at MINIMUM), works more jobs along the way (once again why not just hold on to some of the money from before why even bother giving all that money away knowing full well you were going to need money then getting jobs to get more of what you gave away making things harder for yourself but again whatever), and on top of it all claims to "love" nature and be this "pro gung ho explorer" but goes into it totally unprepared easily the most unprepared person i've ever heard of so no surprise it ended with him starving and freezing to death all alone... no doubt his story is interesting but he's literally the poster child word for word of what NOT to do if you want to live that type of life style.

Tbh I don't know if he was just really naive, suffered from mental health issues or both 🤷🏻‍♀️

In the end, he was 'one of us', by which I mean that we, modern humans are, collectively, living just as unprepared and, if one will 'foolish'. The difference: most of us live on the other end of the spectrum, believing that cancerous consumption will last forever. We too believe that some passerby will save our day, like an Elon Musk, a Joe Biden, a Diddly Trump or some other 'leader'. Good luck on that idea. Maybe Mickey Mouse will come to our rescue when the proverbial Sh . . . hits the also proverbial fan. Dream on!
Today we have Gabor Maté enlightening us as to what happens when - as it may have been the case in McCandless - abusive parents produce and raise children. We suffer from an epidemic of those unfortunate souls who engage in mass shootings, are treated with Ritalin of which we consume 85% of the World's supply.
Christopher was a result of misguided upbringing, knew it and was bent on escaping it, but didn't know how. He was and still is, not alone. There aren't enough Krakauers to write books about the myriad of ill-fated ones that remain.

It's not as though the best practices, safe practices and wisdom of those who actually know the country and how to survive in the wild is secret or unavailable information. The ever-recurring trend of folks making their way somewhere quite dangerous and unforgiving without first preparing is probably fed by many factors. That said, I see in some of the most well documented and "famous"/infamous cases the hubris of how charisma doesn't necessarily attach to the intelligent or wise but can likely lead to a strong positive re-enforcement of some people in whatever they do. I can completely understand some people "defending" a person and their choices against what they see as scorn, or because the defenders figure the person in question has paid more than enough with their life. But for every intercession like that, I see ten that look more like the continued disappointing cascade and effect or feedback loop of charisma and the easily-charmed. Grief, kindness and compassion are all good human instincts. Another though is survival - and in order to learn the lessons of survival we should all learn - we need to stop romanticizing any of this and make sure the imperative of thinking and learning and preparation for any expedition is what comes through. We should also probably train ourselves to at least do a critical check on our own instincts and inclinations and weaknesses and not just drift along either on one's own charms or charisma or in pursuit of anyone else's. It's a shallow empty and often dangerous path, a flaw we all share to an extend, and one which we must try to overcome.

Shaped and forged by modern society he survived 4 months in the wild and that's with the help of a bus for a shelter and a gun. You can watch shows with survival " experts" and they lose weight trying to survive alone. There's a bunch of mammals that can survive solitary but seems like the pack mammals don't fare well trying to do it solo. It's a fascinating story surviving off the land but knowledge of the techniques and area are so important. What he had was a dream of a easy life where human should be going back to the old ways and blending back into the earth and rejoining earth and abandoning the modern cancerous tumors we've become to the planet. But without a pack or tribe he was destined to fall asleep alone in the wild in a tiny bus, a reminder of the modern world and never wake up

I don’t idolize or think badly of him. Chris was a human like the rest of us. I’m not going to sugarcoat it and say he was smart. He made a lot of bad decisions that led to his death but at the end of the day as a follow human being I don’t think he’s anymore less deserving of sympathy than anybody else. I think in his final moments he probably realized he messed up and it’s a tragic story and it is a cautious tale on to prepare for something like this but at the end of the day I hope he has found peace, and rest in the afterlife. That’s all I’ll say.

As a child abuse survivor I can tell you it leaves you with a deep distrust of people and a desire to heal in solitude, but one aspect of it people don't understand is that you can engage in self-sabotaging behaviour and react contrarily when people are kind to you due to deep feelings of shame and worthlessness. I can certainly understand his desire to isolate himself and baffling reactions to people who tried to help him, these are very hard traits to overcome and ultimately I see him as a tragic figure who was crushed by these feelings...
