for a DIY setup, it could be better to just replace the individual broken pins. The only thing you need is a hot air solder, well and a couple of pliers small enough to be able to remove the broken pins and install the replacement pins. The good thing with a hot air soldering station is that you can set the exact temperature you need for it in order to make sure you will not screw something like melting the plastic.

Also, if you replace the entire socket there is a good chance than some of the solder balls may not do propper contact with the board and as a result, the cpu will not get all it's pins properly connected to the motherboard which would result on an unstable and erratic system.

I see it looks like he made a DIY board heater out of a heating element for a clothes dryer. Which is genius. What I don't see is how it is powered, and would love to know.

They probably can make it so these can be replaced but they would get more money by ppl buying a new motherboard.

Hey I have a question. I know I'm late but do you need the heating element to take off the old BGA/socket or is it optional? Also would a simple cheap heater from a store work or is it a specific thing?

if I have a 1150 socket, which they barely seem to sell cpu's for on the market anymore, what is a cheaper and easier solution to upgrade?
or can I use higher numbers? Im not so good with the core and thread configurations.

It's always a good idea to check the data sheet to identify what pins are f**ked, as many are duplicated i.e. 0V and Vcc and connected internally. If so, no worries, just ensure they are not shorted.

That's great way to do the CPU socket replacement by yourself. You should try it with some other motherboard, that have only bent pins and no other problems.

That was pretty obvious that first try will not go well, but it looks like with little practice, it's possible to do it at home, you almost did it on first try, that's actually very good result.

you shouldn’t have used so much friction on the pins that’s what i did with the socket that’s why i’m here :/

Soooo I gave it a go lol problems I encountered were temperature underneath the board I went with a 2000w heater but only got up to 130c one of the things I noticed was the board started to sag slightly I got the old socket off but the board I think warped slightly I cleaned up the pads and all ent really well
However when it came to replacing the socket was a different story long story short not enough flux and the board had warped I could see it wasn’t making contact in the centre of the socket
As I was paying too much attention to the underneath I didn’t notice the pins and top side had gone south so I pulled the socket off again need to add more support to stop the sagging
And then try again I have a video I might just put on anyway

Flux flux flux, you need lots of flux... the liquid type. It takes some skill for success in this application. Too much heat, not enough heat, being to aggressive or not aggressive enough, heating too long or not long enough all matters. Adding low temp leaded soldier to these type of connections is critical in removing old soldier paste, if not you risk ruining the copper tracings... it's a mission critical job for applying and cleanup.

great video, learned a few things. I wish you had put in the processor and gave it a try. Not all pins are required. I have one question though. Why do you require heat at the bottom of the motherboard when the place of action is on top of the motherboard where the soldering flux is?

LGA1150 sockets with mini bent pins that stick out, snag, bend, short, and last but not least... break off of the socket!!! What a terrible design!!! If anyone wants a reason to hate an uppity jack__s, condescending engineer; this here is your reason.

This was satire joke right?

2000watt heat gun? acetone ? Seemingly no experience soldering at all and jumping right to BGA reworking of a modern cpu socket?

Clean flux with iso or 99% rubbing alc get acetone away from motherboard use solder wick to clean pads with soldering iron with generous amounts of flux on the pads you are cleaning keep the heat gun away from your board that thing could melt your battery, don't charge and use that battery like that at the same time and don't connect a powered charger to the battery, turn it on after making the connections precisely preheat the board evenly to a very specific temp and you need a hot air station that can be set so you don't melt anything or exceed the min temp it takes to melt the solder, use a flux paste with solder bits in it when you want to solder the new socket in, clean smooth first then alc then flux paste solder then clean again ensure only a little bit a solder is on each pad then clean again add more flux over it put down socket heat to just what you need to melt solder and have it that hot for a short a time as needed then as you are removing heat ensure not to bump the board and don't touch any surface complainants as they might all be floating on molten solder but cool down slowly and evenly so that expansion and contraction stresses in the materials are not drastic and fracturing the thing from a cold spot right next to a 250c spot

For pre heating and cooling down you should use a air system that blows over the whole board gently even precise heat not a electric stove thing made with a lead acid bat..

and after all that probably still screwed up as a real repair would use a machine that heats removes uses a stencil for the pads places new part and then cools all automated and you just set the settings and put the part in and it does everything you don't touch it.
