I’m lowkey kind of on Alain de Botton’s side on a couple of those points in the first video. I don’t think aesthetics are totally arbitrary (though certain are subjective—the distinction ought to be made) and I think some people do have bad taste. As for the cause of bad taste, a lack of experience is certainly plausible in certain cases, and I don’t necessarily think generational trauma is as out-there and bizarre an explanation as you seem to think it is.

Even if we take his insane to the point of brainrot notion of socialism, he's still arguing that, though it causes lifelong suffering, misery and constant depression, capitalism is still better because COLOR AND SPARKLES IN CUPCAKE OMG.

soviet people have been so traumatized by art deprivation under communism that parks, art museums, cinema and cultural events were free or at the price of a bus ride: there was simply no demand for these things, and by law of the market price decreased. don't worry though, they got un-traumatized by virtues of free market so art has become a delight for the few, as it should be. and for the rest there is a fun an moderately mind-provoking real-life shooter game.

I had a relationship situation that I felt I needed outside help on, therapy is too expensive and I was already subscribed to School of Life but hadn't watched much of their stuff. The videos I watched left me feeling confused and further back than where I started. After that I found your channel, and shortly after these videos. I've since unsubscribed, thank you for the breakdowns on the issues with this channel.

Hey Big Joel, I'm puzzled because I generally very much admire you, and I don't entirely see the point of what you seem to be doing. It would be lovely if you could explain things from your no doubt very legitimate perspective.

What I find particularly hilarious about SchoolOfLife’s assessment of Saudi art has absolutely no regard for art history despite belief that art history does define the metrics of good taste. Saudi architecture is most certainly inspired by Islamic tradition. What he regards as ‘gaudy’ is considered by the historical community to be a devotion to sacred geometry as a means of worship, expressed through constructing vividly colored contrasting patterns. I can’t help but feel his perception of good art is only informed by the Eurocentric interpretation of classical western art.

“Traumatic Art Deficiency” would be a spectacular band name.

I keep coming back to this video because it bothers me so much how many people go along with this bad argumentation (Which honestly I will not make the effort to point out, anyone who actually listens can pick up on the huge logical leaps this guy makes)

Personally, School of life helped me alot. I view it as one of the few sincere channels that actually have the means to spread important messages about mental health and constantly publish high quality content.

Thankfully, i'm pretty certain that Alain and company are mature enough to expect petty criticism and undeserved backlash.

How did Alain de Botton get sucked into this nonsense? He once wrote a book just all about how modern architecture is great. What happened to him?

something this video has done for me, is that whenever I have a very irrational intrusive thought I pretend like it was a thought from the guy who runs school of life. and then it's way easier for me to be like "what?? to be honest, I'd never seen any of School of life's videos that are more "self help-ish". They have some videos outlining the thoughts of famous philosophers, and I think they do a good job. It's pretty wild seeing that this is the rest of their channel

I watched a couple of School of Life videa and they seemed OK, but realised after a few more that they are just a reflection of the authors cynacism and unhappiness. He can't separate his own life experience from everyone's life experience.

Botton's writing is based on classic philosophy writings... His books have the sources quoted in them frequently. I guess the videos are bite sized versions of, lacking the sources. As an intro to ideas they're fine
