Good points all, how does not including some control dials help a beginner? It makes no sense. In this respect Pentax help the beginner, the others hinder them, they make it more difficult to get out of auto, I suspect some people try and as the controls are not there, stay in auto. Current prices in the UK (Amazon K70: £579 Canon EOS 800D: £606 Nikon D5600: £549 (with bundled AF-P 18-55 VR lense) Sony A6500: £1166, the K70 is more than competitive when features are compared... and the KP can be had for only £896, resplendent in silver!

You need more subscribers mate, keep going I'm sure they will come 👍

Built like a tank on the outside!...despite a 10 yo flaw(in the 30/50/70 series) that Ricoh KNOWS about all that time. The solenoid is cheap and fails consistently enough to never consider a k70.

I hate to inflate your ego but two years ago i went through much the same process and bought the K-70 and have no regrets. To be fair i guess we both look like geniuses. Of course you have a heck of a lot more experience and apparently looked at the camera from a different viewpoint. An omission I found was the articulated screen. This is something that I ignored when making my decision and now I could not live without it. Also as a professional you do not worry about prices (yes, I am joking) where I am thrifty (OK, cheap). In that regard, consider doing a follow-up about K-mount lenses.

Kobie
When I bought my Pentax K70 from Samy's Camera in Santa Ana the Pentax dealer they had no Pentax gear in stock I had to special order it. A guy was buying a Fuji camera and spent a lot more money for a equal camera. In fact I was asked why I wanted to wait two weeks for my camera I bought the K70 sight unseen or never hand held

Unfortunately DSLR system is not about camera and one MUST realize that camera is the cheapest part that will be replaced soon. System is about lenses and rest of ecosystem. And Pentax is nowhere near 2008-2010 times when many 3rd party lenses were still available. Now it is rather problematic to recommend K mount... :(

Again, Pentax is a photographer's camera company. Sony, Canom, Nikon do not want their entry level cameras to grow with the photographer, they want to sell you another camera and another. Low end Nikon can't auto focus legacy lenses. I'm not even going to touch on their "P" lens series. Pure and simple. Pentax makes a great camera but they have shitty marketing.

I bought my K-70 last summer. Initially bought it as I was having issues with my older K-x. (The K-x has since been fixed and works nearly like new. :) )

Glad I bought it, works great with all of my Pentax, Tamron and Sigma lenses.

You've forget about pixel shift witch with a good lens can make images as good as a full frame or better. I had the k3ii and I think the k70 is better except for the magnesium body (but is lighter), astrotracer (I prefer the flash) and focus tracking. K70 is amazing! Good video

I think the K-70 punches well above its price point and of the options, is the best choice in camera bodies:
- the Pentax has a Pentaprism vs. Pentamirror (brighter, clearer OVF will make for a more enjoyable shooting experience)
- dial access to all shooting modes as the beginning photographer continues to grow (moving from Auto to Priority (Av or Sv) to Auto ISO to Full Manual)
- having dual command dials to actually make shooting in Manual an enjoyable and ergonomic experience
- better LV focusing
- let's face it, in those Priority modes, the stabilized sensor is a tremendous advantage in mitigating shake in those lower-light scenarios where the beginning photographer would be less aware of shutter speed and exposure compensation
- Canon's 1.6x crop factor means more noise and less dynamic range than the 1.5x crop of the Pentax and Nikon
In terms of scaling the system, it can be tricky. The Nikon and Canon systems have a larger ecosystem of lenses and that can be appealing to a photographer starting out. How real is this issue? I'm not sure. Most new photographers start with the intention of growing, but many never move past the kit lens and a nifty fifty.

Pentax K-70 is better for sport photography than the Sony a6500 :D ???? Sony has continuous autofocus system with more than 300 autofocus points, and it is cover the entire sensor! Pentax has 25... or ... Sigma do not made Pentax lenses in the future, so the 151 is not 151 lenses today, and the third part lenses coming up for E-system every week. So the 121 is much moore today ...

K-70 for beginners? I think it's good for professionals (but single card slot...). Even with K-30 and old manual lenses I can capture great - professional looking product pictures. K-70 has 14bit file as in Pentax's flagship models! The joy of editing :-)

The K5 II is actually cheaper all day long on Fleabay... and the Tamron and Sigma 17-50mm lenses aren't all that expensive either. Throw in DarkTable and GIMP 2.10 (open source software thus free) for editing and you're fine. The K5 II would give a beginner more exposure latitude and more headroom to tinker with their raw files, and allow them to more readily experiment with spot metering, too, thanks to the physical switches for it. I think a noob ought to give their camera a chance to shine with something besides a kit lens, too, unless they're taking it out in snow and rain a lot. After all, for almost a hundred years everyone started out with fixed aperture lenses with more predictable performance.

Bought a K30 in 2013. Stopped shooting it for a few years and picked it up again. Black photos. Found out it had a faulty solenoid made in China. Had to buy a Japanese one (the one Pentax should have used in the first place) from eBay (50 bucks) and a soldering kit (20 bucks). Had to take the camera apart to fix it. I love my K30 and enjoy the Pentax system but if Pentax is going to survive they need to make sure they don't cheap out on their parts to keep their loyal customers loyal. I say this as a Pentax fan.

I was convinced to buy a Pentax when I was a beginner 11 years ago. And I’ve stuck with it and my three favorite lenses for a long time. It’s been easy to use and I learned a lot, but I feel now that it’s limiting me, and honestly it’s never felt comfortable in my hands. Lenses and accessories for Pentax is also hard to find in my country as they are no longer prioritized. I really want a FF mirror less so I’m probably switching next year, but grateful for the years I’ve had with my K-x and K-5.

Being pentax k mount like open source, there are even more lenses made for the K mount, add to that the M42 lenses used with a simple adapter, or the t mounted lenses, that will benefit of in body stabilization...

Many people decide that, if, and when, I become a pro, I want a system that has popularity like the other three, but never become pros. Even then, current day entry level pentaxes have the features and functions that pro's dreamed of just a few years ago.

Two years ago I upgraded from my 11 year old K20 to a K3ii The K20 took good photos and was an upgrade from my Pentax Film camera. I have NO regrets staying with Pentax - there are many features on them that are not found in most other cameras - eg the TAV setting which was on the K20 in 2006 and not easily found in most other brands bar their professional model today. I have shot weddings, landscape and real estate with the K20 and now love the K3ii and the extra resolution it comes with.

Pentax just needs to up its marketing and it too could be seriously back in the game, however at the moment I enjoy a long list of cheap legacy lenses that other brands can't benefit of.

If you live in a cold climate, the Pentax is rated to minus 10 Celcius.
If you don't use Pentax, you can't take your camera outside when the weather hits 0 Celcius.

Also, you can use any K mount lens made in the past 50 years on your new Pentax camera. The other brands force you to buy the latest and most expensive lenses.

Pentax's K mount has been around for decades so there are a LOT of sharp inexpensive manual focus lenses you can find. Pair that with focus peeking (in camera focus aid) and you will get sharp in focus images for cheap if you don't have a lot of money to throw around.

I'm a little late to this party but it was definitely interesting and informative. I've used Pentax exclusively since 1968 when I was in high school. Still a Huge fan of my K-70 although I "might" at some point move to the K-3 iii OR possibly the K-1 ii.
