Why axolotls make TERRIBLE pets (pls watch this before getting an axolotl)

Like totally, "I spend a whole whopping 30 mins to an hour a week" on this sacred life and it's not doing much for my dopamine, She spends over 20 hours a week tho online scrolling through useless stuff, they dont do much in this tiny prison box with literally no levels or space, I wonder why it doesn't get up and dance for her every time she gets home.

The axolotls natural habitat is in Xochimilco Mexico. I HIGHLY recommend supporting local efforts to clean Lake Xochimilco and preserve axolotls in their natural territory. There’s orgs such as Chinampa Temachtiani that take donations and also have volunteer opportunities. Please support this endangered critter so it can thrive in it’s ecosystem instead of pet tanks ❤

I was obsessed with axolotls as a little one before they became such a big thing, and my parents definitely weren’t planning on getting me any until they heard that a family friend had purchased some a while back from a reptile show and was looking to sell. Long story short and several batches of eggs later, we now have five axolotls (divided among several tanks, of course.) I’m very lucky that my paternal grandfather is a fish breeder and knows everything there is to know about aquatic life, so he and my father were and are a massive help in caring for them. Axolotls are definitely not for the faint of heart or easily bored! But, for fish people with a lot of extra space, they’re a fun (albeit challenging) addition to the household.

I've really loved axolotls for a long time and a few years ago I looked into the care it would take and it definitely was a lot of work! More than the fish we kept as kids. Someday when I have more space I'd still like to have one, I'd definitely need a chiller here in warm Florida.

Axolotls are definitely not for everyone! I love mine with all my heart but when people find out I own an axie and they say “oh I want one” I tell them how much of a pain they are to care for. I definitely tend to recommend against getting an Axolotl. I’ve had a few people find out about mine and then say “oh I’ve heard they’re tricky to take care of and I always agree.

That is so wrong! My axolotl is my best friend and they make awesome pets. But this is my opinion and you might feel differently.

I remember seeing this video a year ago before I got my first Axolotl safe to say it definitely teached me a lot. I own 3 at the moment and they are all doing very good.This video is very good for people maybe considering to get an axolotl.

I have had my little Taco for about 3 weeks now, Axoltls have so many personalities although yes you can't interact with them but mine is so active and spends most of his time out and about in his tank and yes he is hard to take care of I done all my research and ensured the tank was perfect once you have the knowledge you will be fine. This no hate at all on this video it is important to know the negatives to.

I've had 2 20 gallon tropical fish tanks....one fancy fish and the other regular fish....I truly enjoyed my tanks but they were a lot of work....I thank you for video. I'm still thinking about getting a little friend...although I do get my babies attach to me whether fin, fur or feathers....I love ALL breathing things...that includes a fish. I cried the first time I lost my Oscar fish....I actually had him or her swim between my fingers...my Mom always called me snow white.....

THANK YOU! I love axolotls but I’d never personally own one because oh how high maintenance they are! And I was at an expo last month and had axolotl breeders trying to tell me I was wrong and they were really easy pets. And I respectfully disagreed but I just found it annoying how easy they were trying to make their husbandry sound to potential buyers. I know I just now saw your most recent video and one of your axolotls has passed because you didn’t have a chiller. And you’re a really good owner and you know what you’re doing. That’s the kind of thing I mean, is that this is a delicate animal that has a lot of very specific requirements and if they aren’t met just in the right way the animal can and will die. I just don’t want one. Too much stress for me. But I am glad people do keep them and have kept the species numbers up by having them in captivity

I wouldn’t consider these “pets” they are in a tank. Fish aren’t “pets” either. If you can’t touch them and handle them regularly they aren’t pets.

I agree with this video 100%, you have to know what you are getting into when getting a new pet. I have had my axies for four years now and there was a period of time where I was a terrible owner and so didn’t take great care of them. I seriously wish it never happened and I regret it but they are better and recovering from that time. I will never let it happen again I cried so much I can’t imagine how they felt.

Wow.. well.. I must say if you turtle girl are looking for something that is entertaining as far as a pet, you should get out of this industry. I love my aquatic pets and I would never only have them for excitement. Unbelievable! These unique creatures are going extinct and lovely people who have them as pets and taking care of them are helping to keep these species alive.
Not one to rant but.. I HAD to say something.
