Centre console is too wide causing footwell to be cramped. The footwell is so small the clutch pedal is too far to right and causes knee injury

For all the negatives compared to the Ford or others, people still keep buying the Hilux! Incredible! When you can clearly get better for your money.

I went with the SR5 this year after having the Ranger generation BT-50. Test drove the twins (Mazda/Isuzu) twice and bitterly disappointed. Wanted to like them but can’t see what the hype is about. Ride and drive was shit and the engine is laggy. The interior looks nice until you see it in person. Just looks like a suv knock-off. Feels cheap and nasty. Ranger is definitely the best but it’s russian roulette with quality. Hilux sells so well because it sits in some odd sweet spot. Not trying too hard anywhere but engine, reliability and drive all better than the others.

Just ordered our 4th Hilux, the reliability, goes where I want it to, and I like the 4WD auto. We have had a great hassle free run of Toyota vehicles, both our cars & Hilux’s.

Great episode
I am a Toyota man and was thinking of the new D=Max ...
But I love the Toyota hilux. It’s a very hard discussion. I am 50,,,,50 .
Thank you for your run through.

The same reasons people with half a brain don’t buy the Chinese crap

We had an Amarok at work. It was ordinary. Needed a cup of coffee lodged in place to keep the high beams on. The first gear in manual was flakey, too easy to stall. I would never buy one.

we had a ranger that was a lemon, it's electronics kept failing . I don't think the ride in Rangers is markedly better than the hi lux having driven both.

I really do not understand why the Hilux is the best seller because it definitely is not the best featured pick up and has the worst interior of its competitors.
Is it a brand and loyalty thing or just people scared of change???
I would love to know if new buyers into the segment are buying Hilux...

i have one, things wrong so far.. headlights dont turn off when you lock the vehicle if you have parked in the shade, stereo will not turn off, keeps turning back on, battery power supply is only long enough to fit European style low height battery, it will not reach a slightly taller battery, same goes with the battery clamp system, not a practical vehicle at all, what happens if you need a battery in the country and they dont stock the little euro batteries.
auto drive mode is awful, gearbox only works acceptably in sport mode, built so f%^&*n cheap, the worst cheapest interior in its class, fake plastic stitching, cheap plastics inside and out
your review is nothing more than a salesmans video working for toyota

The reason it sells more because it prostitute itself to governments at massive discounts. Take these sales away it runs fourth. Ranger is well clear at number one

You guys in Australia love to boost Amarok and Ranger... Yet it does not help the sales.. In South Africa same story and the Hilux is outselling everything els for many years.... With good reason..
Thanks guys, by the way, I am not a Toyota fan. 🙂

Exactly the same as the old model really. Toyota need to up their game when Isuzu and Mazda have really come a long way. The ranger smokes this

Hilux: I'm still pulling in early 2000s fuel economy numbers

The Japanese diesel is well behind the Euro models. For example the X5 40D produces 700 Nm and 250Kw from 3.0 L engine let alone its NVH is more refined. The legendary Prado can sprint from 0 -100km/h within 17 seconds....
The electric car development is also behind other makers.

Um isn’t it the best selling Tom because it’s sales include 2WD & 4WD AND fleet sales? Separating into just 4WD I think Ford Ranger tops them? Feel free to correct me. The Ford Ranger was the pack leader for some time.

The interior looks like a Friday afternoon design. Toyota probably thinks people will take anything with a Toyota badge on it. As you say, Ranger and Amarok with nicer interiors.

Not sure where you are getting the 59k price from Tom. You can't buy these under 65k Qld and 66k NSW according to Toyota website. Toyota added 13k AUD to all Hilux models with engine updates.

Toyota are going to sell on their longevity and reliability reputation. This is what most punters want and it seems that by and large what Toyota delivers. It does not have to be the best Ute on this basis. Would I buy one? Not at the asking prices.
