What is software-defined networking (SDN)?

Hello, Can I apply Software Define Network for AI device like jetson nano ?

Think of SDN as a smarter way to manage how devices connect to the internet or a network, like your home Wi-Fi. Instead of a traditional setup where your router controls everything, SDN uses a clever "traffic cop" (central controller) to guide the data flow.

This traffic cop can talk to different devices, like switches and routers, and tell them where data should go, just like a traffic light guiding cars on different lanes. This makes it easier to set up and manage the network, sort of like having a smart system in place.

So is this to say that sdn uses virtualized software to override the hardwares firmware to manage the data? New to IT and studying for my A+, just trying to wrap my head around this.

SDN is more than separation of control plane from data plane, using centralized software for the control plane. SDN is three abstractions: distribution, configuration, and forwarding. The distribution abstraction allows us to turn the old school networking practice of having a protocol per problem into a software community ruled by standards and patterns. Configuration abstraction allows us to map abstract/disparate configuration elements cleanly onto physical hardware. As far as the forwarding abstraction goes, switches and routers might not even be the units of abstraction, it can be an entire data center fabric that’s the abstraction. Regardless, the forwarding abstraction always has two brains to write programs for: the management hardware (CPUs) and the high speed forwarding hardware (ASICS, etc). By separation of these concerns, we can reason and scale independently in each area. This leads to faster innovation via software because we can specialize as deep as we want to go in those areas. The core idea is to make the distributed control problem a logical centralized one, just like we have done for storage and compute.
