I have also decided not to grow tulips in my operation, there are too many hurdles to jump, the main negative factor is the weather, I flower farm in zone 3. I will not grow kress as it bolted for me when seeding it and I did not see the value of it in bouquets. I have not grown Dara or Queen Anne's lace yet and will perhaps avoid the reseeding issues in the future. I had a lot of reseeding issues with Vanilla Sunflowers and double cosmos but I planted some of the seedlings in rows and my husband cultivated the rest under. I am looking forward to getting my used Kubota rototiller fixed for next year, we bought it somewhat damaged but my husband will fix it. I will be able to do a better job of keeping the weeds down. Love your videos!
ОтветитьI love stock flowers (Mathiola incana) and also I use to grow Malva (Alcea Rosea) both from seed, but flea beetle ruined all those leaves and they became a huge population in no time I try to fight against it in a ecological approach, but was so time consuming and the gardener next to me never deal with their flea beetle so, they revisited my own again and again. I haven't enough time to gardening due to health issues so flea beetle destroyed my alyssum maritimum and erysimun cheirii leaves, after eaten my stock flowers and Alceas, so my only solution was don't grow this varieties for a few years to try reduce they population cutting their food and using some soap and water spray in those plants they appear on leaves before start blooming due to protect my pollinators and another beneficial insects. After this now I will try this species again. Crossing fingers!!!
ОтветитьKind of random, but I was wondering if you could eat ornamental alliums, like as a garnish?
ОтветитьI'm doing tulip at least once next year to try them out in my new climate, but they are lame that they are basically an annual. Cosmos are a nope for me too, were hard to direct sow, I'll stick with some daisys instead. :)
ОтветитьI will never grow ROSES because they BITE me !!!
Ответитьhad the same issue with my tulips!
ОтветитьGreat video! Thanks for detailing your personal experience it is so valuable to other gardeners! From Toronto
Ответитьme looking at my static seedlings. I hope they dont give me too much grief
ОтветитьTulips are soooo expensive as a home gardener. Now knowing all the fungicide issues, they will definitely be moving to my NO list. I planted Dara for the first time this year and am in love, so will be interesting to see if I have issues with it reseeding! 😮
ОтветитьThe tulip fungicide issue was very surprising. Even Johnny's Seeds tulips are from the Netherlands.
ОтветитьPerennial scabiosas are NOT THAT perennial. Practically all of them are short-lived, just like aquilegias. I do not recall any of them made to year 3( zone 7b Denmark). Recommended tulip: Apeldoorn Elite (all bulbs still live after 10 years here)
ОтветитьI didnt realize about the tulips. They are not my favorite flower but i enjoy that they are earlier bloomers. I just bought a couple bags on sale last year and had ho-hum show. Your info has me rethinking what i can use for my early bloomers like snowdrops and crocus for example. I won't be buying anymore tulips. Any suggestions on earlier bloomers?
ОтветитьVery interesting.
ОтветитьSame for tulips cosmos scabiosa
ОтветитьI hate queen anns lace. it was everywhere and isnt it very poisonous to domestic animals???
ОтветитьI am not a flower grower but I do grow a fair amount of cuttings flowers and I totally agree with you! Did not know about the fungicide issue. I have stopped growing tulips a few years ago as well.
ОтветитьThanks for the info about fungicide! Good to know.
ОтветитьWas defintely surprised how many of the Dara seedlings just popped up this year after i grew them for the first time last year. Just in my private little garden. And actually i dont even love the colour that much. Pass!
ОтветитьThank you for the videos and like you I grow Dahlias and cross pollinated to get new colors My plant to absolutely avoid is Drumstick Allium,…very invasive and hard to get rid of. I am sorry I planted 60 of them 5 years ago now I have hundreds to kill. I usually wait for a raining day to be able to pull it all stem and bulb out and discard it. Do not put it on your compost pile
