long story short, its not about the gear. If you dont want ANY room for error, the expensive gear is the option, but by all means if you think your gear is holding you back, its not. Ive met audio people that just keep buying more and more gear instead of working on their skill of learning how to write songs better, and they just keep going spending hours researching and thousand's on gear, when little jimmy is gonna listen to the song on apple earbuds or a phone speaker anyway.....

So a microphone like the U87 in conjunction with a Neve 1073 is the vocal chain that everyone wants.

But I would be interested to know which cheap alternative comes closest? twin ut87 and heritage? wa87 and wa73? or maybe the golden age?

Guys, extraordinary more expensive cables, especially those with golden pins do absolutly nothing different to your sound in any other way, than normal xlr cables do. Thats a big myth there. You just waste money on these. It's a nice marketing trick from audio companies.

I don’t think it’s about the sound of things more of the transition to different things that you play it on like headphones, car , etc . Both sounded amazing

difference was night and day, love watching videos like this. Looking at that UAD LA610 MKII or Avalon VT-737 paired with a Radial Cube 500 Series 3-Slot power rack with 2 SSL 611EQs and a Empirical Labs Derresser, to add to my vocal chain. Currently Just using TLM 103 -> Babyface RME pro fs -> DAW with digital plugins.

Outside of $$$ , will a chain like this , compared to just an interface be much more complicated to use and work with ?

Microphone can make a huge different i belive🔥 but there are Plugins that sound very similar to analor gear and you probabaly won't hear a difference only with very good speakers

If you have a hexacore Apollo, you could go with DSP LA-2 + something like Century Tube CS. Is it really necessary to have a hardware stack? Seems like overkill.

Imo, a digital compressor works just fine. I dont see why anyone who's not a professional making money from music would get an actual compressor. Unless its for live performances on streaming platforms or something

Thanks a lot for this comparison!!! Let's be honest... the answer is definitely NO. The difference is not even 2 times the price. I would say that it is much more a taste thing. I listened on my Beyerdynamics and on my near field monitors. Most people listen music on their crappy EarPods. They don't hear any difference!

This dude’s living in the past. You don’t need chain gear… That’s what plug-ins are for !!! There is almost NO DIFFERENCE between the two set-ups. You won’t hear any differences until you listen thousands of times to the comparisons, and by then it’s all just in your imagination. Such a waste of money!

I feel like the cheap stuff you had sounded almost the same as the expensive items, I really appreciate you showing us this so we don’t spend al that time finding out that it wasn’t needed. It’s just how you eq and edit the vocal is where the trick & magic is.

I think to the average person listening on their car stereo or bluetooth speaker at home, they will not be able to tell the difference between the $600 setup and $8000 setup. They just arent interested enough to notice or care. Its like asking the audience to decide if they want music coming out of HS5 speakers, or Rokit 5s or Adam Audio T5V. They are gonna sound 98% the same to most ears. Its splitting hairs with the most important people with a seat at the table -- the listener. For the audio geeks, sure they will be able to tell, but its all they do 24/7 is listen to music and voices. To Fred or Janet sitting at home however, it basically all sounds the same unless you're routing the audio from a $10 Amazon headset to $20 Altec Lansing speakers. The diminishing returns principle is extremely steep in the audio world. The last 5-10% in quality costs about 10-20 times more than the first 90-95%. For most folks its simply not a path worth pursuing. However if money is no object and cash is sitting around to burn, or you are given the chance to use someone else's high-end gear for free, have at it. The music itself, the singing chops, the artistry of the composition -- that's where the meat and potatoes is. You can't make me sound good through a $200,000 pair of McIntosh speakers, but James Taylor will still sound amazing through a plastic funnel you use for your oil changes.

Should have used the same mic and the same line in the song. To me, the extra expense was totally not worth it.

No offense I couldn't tell much of a difference. To the average untrained listener, there won't be much of a difference. You might as well go to an actual studio and record this rather than focusing so much on the equipment. By the end of it I was just thinking you might as well have become a studio engineer because if you're an artist, the music should be your focus and quality will come. I could not tell a difference between between the first set up to the upgraded version.

The wa2a and the uad together add up to ALMOST an La2a. Ngl if i had tp bust this much money, id have gone with an analog la2a and kept whatever interface i already had.

Beautiful vocals - the budget setup is great, but there’s a definite buttery smoothness running through those Marinair transformers in the Neve, and under the gentle dynamic control of an optical compressor, which does raise it to that velvety pro level.
