Riga was great 20yrs ago when I visited. Love the architecture, people were very nice, when I was there they only had a few excellent beers. The food was great the potatoes hash browns 😋awesome. Stunning women, after about two weeks you get used to them when gorgeous women are everywhere. The fruit market was great. They like tennis as well.

I think it's not right to say Latvia has been a part of Russia. The land has been taken over and ruled by the Russian Empire, after the WWII by USSR, so some Russian influence can be found.
The big song festivals are not unique for Latvia. They are also held in Lithuania and Estonia.

Please do your homework before putting things on-line. What you called the freedom monument was looked upon actually a symbol of oppression of the Latvian people by the Soviet Russians. Latvians very rarely went to the site of this symbol. It was finally destroyed on August 26, 2022.
