Such a great loss to the sport, my own F1 discovery coincided with his first season at Ferrari so I have been privileged to live through most of his career at the sharp end of the sport culminating in the wonderful bonus of delightfully taking in the wisdom and calmness of his guiding hand in the Mercedes team. Niki was more than just a legend.

I am Austrian. Following Niki Lauda on TV since 1973 ... in 1974 (as he was already the best driver with 9 (!!!) (nine!!!) polepositions (!!!) in his first Ferrari season!) I said to myself as a 11 years young boy - ONE DAY I WILL AND NEED TO MEET THIS MAN ... well 1975 - 1976 - 1977 - he was again and still the best man in F1 ... if he would not have left Ferrari in 1978 he would have won WC as well in 1978 and 1979 --- near his un-human comeback after nearly burning and dying in Monza 1976 - every expert would agree: To come back in F1 as a top driver to win races and win the World Championship again - holding back with all efforts a young hungry excellent driver like Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna - WOW! WOW! WOW! This is the peak of racing! (Some silly Austrians talking - that Niki Lauda was not a racer!!! He just drove with tactic - THEY ARE REALL SILLY - THE ARE HATERS AND GOT NO KNOWLEDGE AT ALL! In this (much too short story :-) ) you can see superb hard fights in an really racing F1-car - of the 70ies and 80ies! In 1988 Niki Lauda was my sponsor in Badminton! In 1996 Lauda Air was my sponsor for a top world cass Badminton Tournament LAUDA AIR CUP. I had interview Niki for my Badminton magazine - have many photos with him together. And IT IS SENSATIONAL TO READ ALL THESE INTERNATIONAL SUPER LOVELY COMMENTS ON NIKI LAUDA! Venerate this man forever!

I would argue that pulling out of the wet Japanese GP was at least as brave, in another way, as his comeback drive. Lesser me n would have been afraid of the opinions of others for doing so.

Also interesting to note, as mentioned, he spent Saturdays setting up the car for the race instead of trying to out qualify Prost, something Prost did with Senna some years later. The Computer teaching The Professor!

I love the way they present the austrian win as a sign of great perseverance or whatever when lauda already said in a video on this channel that he only did it because he was too lazy to walk back to the pits

If we got Walter Roehrl as genius behind wheel in world of rallying. In F1 we got niki lauda as someone who are simply ahead of its time.

The narrator claims that Lauda beat his team mate (Scheckter) at the Hockenheimring in 1977. For the record, Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter were never team mates. Never. In 1977, Scheckter drove for Walter Wolf Racing. Lauda's team mate in 1977 was Carlos Reutemann who replaced Clay Regazzoni for that season.
