Interesting how France also had a massive navy with modern war ships in 1939, but by 1940 they decided to sit the war out and leave it to the UK and commonwealth....now I could understand the army having to sit it out (even though you can swim to England from Northern France), but why would the French navy not sail to England and join forces with the Royal Navy when France fell?

Pretty good video. Only one thing left out, the destroyers for bases deal in September 1940 where the UK received 50 destroyers from the USA for land for naval and air bases.

While this video gave the numbers of other navies they seemed to omit the number of ships built by America. Maybe because they didn't have enough space? America built ten battleships by the end of WW2 plus one that was 70% finished but not completed. They started the war with eight carriers and ended the war with 16 fleet Essex class carriers and 90 smaller carriers. They built 36 light cruisers and 16 heavy cruisers, 249 destroyers, 120 destroyer escorts, and hundreds of smaller ships and landing ships. By the end of 1946 America had a navy of 1400 warships! America still has 11 of the largest carriers ever built, plus another 500 warships of various sizes. The Russian navy basically consists of ships that spend more time being repaired then sailing!

The icons for fleet carriers and escort carriers should have been different. They are as different as destroyers and cruisers.

When I was playing Hoi4 and learnt about 'taskforces' for the naval units and squadrons, I thought these were just in game terms.. Turns out almost all the terms are directly actual military terms, Im impressed.

Japan never stood a chance against the US Navy. USA could produce in a year or two more ships than the entire Japanese navy had in its entire history. It was only a matter of time until they got stomped.

So this video is honestly mostly worthless. Just looking at the numbers of ships every country has tells you nothing, a fleet carrier is the same as a frigate by that measure. Just looking at numbers you would think the British Fleet in Europe at the start of the war was the weakest when it was the strongest. The French Navy was generally considered better than the Italian navy and the Russian navy was more or less garbage.

At the very least the measurement should be displacement instead of number of ships. That's still going to vastly oversimplify the comparison but it's much more meaningful.

Britain did not declare war on Japan in response to Repulse and Prince of Wales being sunk. Britain was already under attack at this point by Japan, and Repulse/Prince of Wales was sent to assist in the fighting in Malaya, which had already basically seen the Japanese dislodge the British and they were holding out in Singapore. Britain declared war on Japan before the U.S. did in response to Pearl Harbor and other Pacific attacks.

Please redo this video.
1. The U.S had 7 Aircraft Carriers at the start of WW2. You show this in your graph, but you should clarify that the U.S's 3 carriers were in the Pacific, with more in the Atlantic or near completion. People are going to think the U.S had 3 carriers combined.

2. For the Part of the Battle of Midway, you only showed the Japanese Carrier Task Force. The Japanese had many more ships at Midway. Worse, you show the Japanese cruiser loss at part of the Carrier Task Force. The cruiser that was sunk was from another Japanese task force.

3. You need to specify between fleet, escort and light carriers.

4. As others have pointed out, you missed other major players like Canada, Australia, etc.

The numbers are wrong! I have no idea where they get their numbers or how they are counting?

The USA had 7 aircraft carriers at the start of the war: (Lexington [CV-2], Saratoga [CV-3], Ranger [CV-4], Yorktown [CV-5], Enterprise [CV-6], Wasp [CV-7] and Hornet [CV-8]).
The US carrier Langley [CV-1] had been converted to a seaplane tender, so she does not count.
Ranger was older, slow and fought in the Atlantic, so maybe they do not count her for that reason? She was still in the war though and she did fight.

The Japanese had 10 carriers (Hosho [1922], Akagi [1927], Kaga [1929], Ryujo [1933], Soryu [1937], Hiryu [1939], Zuiho, [1940], Shokaku [1941], Zuikaku [1941] and Hiyo [1941].)

I guess maybe they are only counting the fleet carriers here? Event hat makes no sense!
In this case, the US still had 7 carriers: (Lexington [CV-2], Saratoga [CV-3], Ranger [CV-4], Yorktown [CV-5], Enterprise [CV-6], Wasp [CV-7] and Hornet [CV-8]).
Lexington, Saratoga and Enterprise were in the Pacific at the start of Hostilities. Yorktown, Wasp and Hornet were in the Atlantic.
The Ranger (not counted) was also in the Atlantic.
The Langely (not counted) was anchored in the Philippines and would be sunk by the Japanese later.

Of the Japanese carriers, only 6 of these were considered fleet carriers. (Akagi [1927], Kaga [1929], Soryu [1937], Hiryu [1939], Shokaku [1941], Zuikaku [1941]), but that does not make the lighter carriers unworthy of being counted. They made their contribution to the Japanese war effort as well.

In short, if you are going to produce something about the war get your facts straight. What is the point in telling half-truths? Simplicity? People are too simple as it is.

After France capitulated to Germany, Britain asked them to turn over their navy--which the French refused. The British fired on the French fleet at anchor in Oran, sinking and damaging several ships. The French later scuttled the best part of their fleet in harbor at Toulon to keep it out of German hands.

It was not only in the navy like that, same was with Airforce and Army. And now think about it. Would you start a war if you know that you start it totally outnumbered? Right. Nobody would. There is something fishy about the "History".

You are incorrect you got your information from Google on December 7, 1941 the United States Navy had four aircraft carriers. The enterprise lexical, the Yorktown and the newly commissioned USS hornet CV 8 commissioned in October 26, 1941. Please do not get your historical facts from Google. It knows nothing and you should have caught this when you just said they only had 31 was sunk three days after the war started but yet we had three at Midway six months later you don’t build a aircraft carrier in six months, especially Yorktown class. Think about what you’re actually telling people and please convey the correct information.

You have done a disservice to the Royal Canadian Navy. By the end of the war they were the 3rd largest navy in the world. I understand you have group them with the British navy . The role Canada played in the North Atlantic was enormous and they deserve to be treated a such..
