Most users of any drug start out as functioning but it's a slippery slope especially with heroin it makes all the bad things in life go away for a while it's like a security blanket until it becomes a boa constrictor.

I was a dope user for 10 years. I was functioning the entire time, yes my relstionships suffered with everyone who cares about me. You may be functioning, but your sure as hell arent happy. Im happy now. 7 years clean. I was an IV user the whole time. I never ODed once. But inwasnt an idiot either. I knew my limit and knew where it was coming from the same place for years, but you never know.

Someone close to me is a crack user so he claims. After personally living with him for 3 months I can say he isn’t your typical crackhead and he does isnt fact act like a functional human being.

Respect for everyone going through addiction wether in recover or still using. Your strong to go through everyday of this and anyone whos not tried this drug yet. Listen to what your family and friends taught you when you was young. Stay sober. Dont justify it to yourself its ok to do drugs. Or you will end up on the streets unless your lucky

All i can say ive been a functioning addict for years, and i cant wait to get sober i feel like its a trap and ya its obviously an addiction but mentally ive felt trapped, using for years it gets to a point you need to ask yourself why am i using and confront your past trammas

I must say that its disgusting to promote being a functioning addict. There is no such a thing when abusing drugs. You are an addict and at the end of the day the drug rules everything, thats it. 5 years clean from opiates myself, thankfully.

I really think your life needs to be about more than just "functioning". We're here for such a short time. Can a person actually thrive?

Never shot it up but ive smoked it a few times. Was getting 1.7gs at a time and trust me benzodiazepines and alcahol are harder to FULLY cold turkey

First time I ever seen someone acknowledge the fact that addiction spans all walks of life, all social classes.
Of course, the most visible hardcases are what every one incorrectly assumes to be every addict - the homeless, the vagrant huddled on the street corner.
Doctors, lawyers, entertainers and pro athletes who have more money and privacy hide their addiction more easily so people think that doesnt exist.

I'm a functioning addict. I work and am married. I've been without and deal with being sick. I never sold all of my belongings to get high though I have spent money I shouldn't have. I never stole anything. I've also been an alcoholic. A couple of dui offenses later and I managed to give that up. I thought that was the hardest thing. The opiates really get a grip on you. I have lots of respect for anyone that is able to quit and never touch it again. I've tried and tried to do that and now I'm 41. If anyone sees this that is thinking about doing pills for the first time JUST SAY NO!

This is heartbreaking before anything else. I think when we decriminalize it, we'll have to have a much better social net to help because otherwise we have just endorsed and encouraged people to deal with their pain and loneliness this way..

Daphne may not be totally honest about her addiction but what she said about having something else, or rather committing to something else being the one and only reason she hasn't overdosed yet, shows what's underneath the mask of taking drugs or any addiction; mental issues, just big enough to tip you over

So a person doesn’t just get hepC or HIV from injecting. You become infected if you share syringes with someone who already has the disease. The same can happen if you share other drug paraphernalia, like straws for snorting. HIV and Hepatitis C are blood-borne illnesses. So there has to be contact with infected blood, entering your bloodstream, or other bodily fluids.

Nobody can 'function' when their supply is removed. That's the point. If you have money your only problem would be the police catching you or your dealer. But you have no heroin you cannot function! It takes a lot of forward planning and money.
