The best FREE music tools in 2019!

Been working in Bandlab since day one. I used to work on an old IPhone (Recently switched to an IPad and it's way easier cause now I can use MIDI) and I've never really had any problems. You will experience latency issues depending on how old the model of your device is but there's a (sort of) fix for that in the app/website. I think as long as you have one of the newer models though you should be fine. I have an IPad 9 and don't experience any latency issues unless I plug and unplug something while still in the app. So if you ever want to switch MIDI controllers or temporarily unplug your audio interface, make sure you exit out of the app before you do (You don't have to exit the project itself; just press the home button) and wait for it to get fully set up before you go back in.

Fun, weird sequencer tool is ORCA - it takes some learning, but it lets you visualize sequencing in a unique way. I recommend playing with it, as it leads to some emergent sounds and tracks while friendly with easy live modifications.

And it starts looking like the Matrix when you get enough things going on in it.

Hey I know this vid is like 2 years old, but I want to know, what is that recording module on VCV, and is it better than VCV Rec? I usually just use VCV Rec.

LMMS is a great audio workstation, it has everything you need for music making (if you know how to use it), it might seem a bit complicated the first time you use it, but after watching some videos and tutorials you’ll get the grasp of it.
The only down side is that you can’t record audio directly into the software, but you can import audio files, so you’ll just record watch you need in something like audacity and then import the file to LMMS.
It’s actually insane how this DAW is free.

Audacity is more of a tool I use for tuning up samples, normalizing and fade-in and fade out of recordings from VCV. I have used it to mix tracks into a song, but it's a chore. All that said, it's kind of like the multi-meter, oscilloscope and sonic screwdriver kit for audio.

for those coming back to this now, Bandlab also has a site called Mix Editor which is a reasonably full functioned DAW totally free that can literally run on the web, no installation needed. I've used it for a while and have never felt the need for anything more.

A little late to this, but if you're looking for a good piano VST, Keyzone Classic has a Yamaha Grand Piano preset that sounds really great and I just found Piano One by Sound Magic. I haven't used it yet, but I hear good things. Also for reverb/delay Valhalla has Super Massive, which is fun.
