Feedback for Techbee:

Before looking into how much it is worth doing, techbee and is it a course as they claim it to be.

My Overview: I am joined this program as part of the pioneer batch, which is 2017 initial batch. Like literally, I am the 3rd person chosen for this program. I did biology in my +12 and does not have any prior programming knowledge what so ever. I would say, much of the technical stuff was learned during my job tenure.

I have around 5 years of experience and completed all the process of techbee and the graduation as such. I am writing my understanding and feedback of the course as follows.

A brief introduction to the program:

A Techbee is an exclusive job program for students looking for financial independence after completing Class XII and gain work experience parallel to studies. It is somewhat truthful here, as they claim. But please do note: you could do the same without this course with any degree.

Pointers.

The Trainees will go through a 12-month phase of training (3 months soft skills, 6 months - technical skills, 3 months - OJT(On-The-Job-training).

At the moment, they have two different streams

(IT Services - this mostly includes (support, L2AS, L3AS, development activities (rarely). Fees: 1.1L, Salary: 1.7LPA)

(Digital Process - this mostly includes (INFRA Support, server monitoring, networking etc). Fees: 51K. Salary: 2.2LPA)

For enrollment: 60% marks in +12, HCL CAT (It won't be so difficult), one-on-one interview(optionally).

After Enrollment: The classes mostly will be online. Earlier it was totally offline, now it's online. The syllabus would be dry, they would teach skills needed for work. Please note it down, no more, no less. Skills required to work. The Most of the Mentors would be approachable, some of them may not.

They have exams every week and month to assess where a trainee stands and grade them accordingly.

OJT: Once all the exams are cleared, you would be randomly placed in projects (depends on vacancy). Here luck and politics comes into play. They might place you in a project that does not suit your skill. It might be in shifts(early morning, night shift).

During OJT, you would mostly do documentation and monitoring activities. Very few may do more than that.

-FT conversation: After serving OJT, you would be converted to permanent payroll and your experience starts from this point onwards.

-Hikes: They claim it will be purely based on performance. It's a lie, there is a very much bigger politics involved with that. Even you work to the best, unless you have a understanding manager who appreciates your work, you won't have your work recognized and gets less hike.

-On-Sites: Most of the European and American countries don't accept people without degree. So, you are not eligible for any on-site options, never get tricked by them for this.

-Education: It is mandatory to do a graduation with HCL partnered institutions. They have 5 of them (BITS, SASTRA university, AMITY University, IIM Nagpur, KL University)

BITS: They Provide a 4 years BSC (work integrated), Its full time (that's what they claim). Though nowhere outside, people accept that.

AMITY: They provide a work integrated B. Com/BCA/BBA for 3 years.

SASTRA: Work integrated BCA – 3 years.

IIM: Integrated Management Program – 5 years

KL : BCA – 3 years

Some of the course’s claim, they are full time (work integrated). But please don't trust them, it is not recognized at any other organization (big 4s).

Fees: Each course differs, and they have increased for some. You will get 25K per year from HCL as per policy).

- Bonds: They claim there is only 3 years bond. It's an utter lie.

The Initial bond for training would of 3 years. Later once you start to do UG in the partnered universities. after completion you need to server 2 more years.

So totally it will be like (6-7 years of bond) after TECHBEE training, based on 4 (or) 3-year course you chose.

-Skills: Any skills you learn, it will be based on the project you are assigned, if they assign you to the service desk. You might not be able to learn more about technical stuffs.

Timelines: I will also show a comparison at the last, between outside degree and doing TECH Bee.

year: 1 You will undergo training and signed to a project(work) then complete OJT there.

year: 2 Your experience actually gets calculated from this year onwards, so don't include 1st year as work experience. You will enroll in universities within six months.

year: 3 your second year of work starts and parallelly you might complete your (1st year UG).

year: 4 Your Third year, you have given promotion based on performance (you face a lot of politics by then).

year: 5 Your fourth year of work starts, you would have completed 3 years of UG.(if you opt for 3 year's course, it would be finished by this year)

year: 6 You have started 5th year of your job. Anyone who opted for BITS UG, would have completed their course.

year: 7 people have to serve bond period due to UG. By this time, you will again get promoted to lead (again based on many aspects).

year: 8 people have to serve notice period.

year: 9 you are free to leave HCL, in case you opt for it.

(Also, one can break the bond by paying them renumeration), by so leaving early is possible. I am doing the same too. (smiley).

Now Coming to the comparison of doing TECHBEE / normal 3 years degree. For easier comparison: I will choose similar courses and packages as per recent market rates.

Fees: A normal 2nd tier college would have around 20-30K per semester. So, a BSC would totally cost a maximum of: ~1,80,000.

The Techbee course cost you the training fees: 1.1Lakh maximum

and the UG program: 15k per semester, so around 90K for the entire course.

Both the expense would be more or less same.

Salary:

For a techbee: hike depends on multiple factors, let's assume we got excellent in all performance.

year 1: 2.2LPA

year 2: 2.6LPA

year 3: 3.2LPA

year 4: 4.2LPA

year 5: 5LPA

This would be your approximate salary. Please don't ask my salary. This is based on assumption and the previous hike percentage which was given.

For any UG finished graduate: your salary would be: if case selected during campus interview around (5-6LPA) approx., it will differ for IIT's obviously.

Off-Campus (3.5 - 4LPA) approx.

Hence, any fresher graduate will get a higher salary that an experienced Techbee. But they claim there will be no difference at all. THAT'S A TOTAL LIE.

Opportunities:

-You won't have On-Site options much, very rarely some developing countries may take. Though it won't be much beneficial.

-Project switch: You can forget about that; you would never have a chance for that. The manager will never allow it.

-Promotions: Purely based on office politics and what rating (grade based on performance).

-Technical Exposure: you will have a great exposure. Based on project, it might be technical or non-technical.

Freedom: You would practically a corporate slave. Night shifts- you must do it, weekend support- you must do it, late night support - you must handle.

There is no way you can decline that. If you do so, you will be in the manager’s bad book. Trust me, you will have bigger problems because of that.

Job Switch: You have somehow completed this program, and look for a job switch. only handful of big MNC will take you in, other consider your degree as part time.

Though you have better chances at (startups and midlevel organizations). From my own experience, that is.

Pros:

1) you start early in career and have a better starting point than graduate freshers.

2) You don't have to pay any money now, HCL will help in it, either way you have to pay later with your salary.

3) UG Certificates from topmost universities such as BITS, IIM.

CONS:

1) You will literally be treated with discrimination, any work that others avoid will be given to you. As you are a corporate slave.

2) You will have stress to the roof, (5 days work, 1 day UG class, Sunday assignments). So at least for a few years, you will have stress that affects your health.

3) Your Salary, will be very behind as per market standards. If you compare, they will point it out you are a Techbee.

4) No Opportunities involving - On-Site/ Near shore.

5) 7 years of bond. If you are a fresher graduate, you can switch jobs easily. More pay and more exposure.

The Techbee course is particularly framed for the betterment of HCL and to increase its overall profit. As there is currently a bigger talent issue going on (resource switching in few years, lack of flexibility in work, higher pays due to inflation). HCL to avoid all of it, came up with a plan to hire 12th teenagers.

It’s a screwed plan with a publicly clean motive. There actual motive is worst, which is why I never felt this program is not for me. Believe me most of the Techbee feels the same.

You should also understand, it does not mean. The Techbee course is evil or worthless. It has some advantages for people from lower socio-economic backgrounds who could not afford tuition fees from tier-1,2 colleges. Though most of the benefits go to HCL.

It is not a course for people who already have goals or people who are yet to decide. As i was also someone came across that age, I too had plans, due to financial situations, I had to choose Techbee. Still date i am regretting of not to pursue what i had my goal. That's for some other time.

For anyone, who is not sure and very well can attend at least a Tier-2 college. Better finish a BSC/ BE and take time to decide your career path, "NO NEED TO RUSH" and join Techbee It is better to avoid it, i repeat it’s not as HCL claim it to be.
