So a lot of the bad rep for the m60 comes from its last years of military use. Those were, in large part, the same m60s that were in vietnam and every conflict after that point. Theyd had millions of rounds run through them, were subjected to the grunt treatment for years, were usually only passably maintained at best, and so they were kinda bad guns because of 30+ years of hard usage.
