My wardrobe is either expensive suits or sweatpants and shorts. It's a tug of war between my understanding I need to dress the part for work and my frugality.

Guys, you don’t need to dress up. It’s nice if you want to, but stop buying this crap wholesale.

Dressing up is very important indeed. This thought reminds me of growing up in the Methodist Church and why after my wife and I were married there I never went back.

I love wearing a suit and tie. The suit has to be very dressy and formal looking. It comes from my military days. I never loosen my tie in public.

In the 1960s, air travel in the US was regulated and only the wealthy could afford it. The average seat was equivalent to business class today.

Might be one of the few things I disagree with JP on. I've seen plenty of people wear non-formal attire and pull it off, if you wear a suit and your confidence stinks it will not help you whatsoever. Dress for comfort and be confident in what you wear and if that's suits then cool, but don't push a subjective fashion ideology on people and say they aren't men if they don't abide by it.

My father always wore a suit for work. I was raised mormon and men always wore a suit and tie. And women wore dresses.

I'm in a rural area now . My 83 y/o father does the color guard for military funeral services. He keeps his shoes polished and his uniform meticulous. This week, my mother and I, went with him to a funeral. We stayed in the car to be respectful. I was in shorts so i didn't want to be seen since I wasn't dressed appropriately. However, as guests started to arrive, i could see that most of them were in shorts or jeans....i could not believe it!

I have a very serious chronic illness but have a son that needs taken care of. There were times when i literally crawled out of bed and ran to the store without bathing or brushing my hair or teeth (not something I'm proud of, it was just the best i could do at the time). When i would get to the store, not only did i look better than anyone else in there, i smelled better too. Including the employees.
It makes me so sad.

It really isn’t hard to pick out an outfit for the day a matter fact, the way my parents raise me was on Sunday. I lied all my clothes for the week I would iron my clothes I would press them. I’ll make sure everything was laid out and ready to go my mike, my shoes have to be clean. I went to private school for the first nine years of my life and that’s set a foundation that stuck with me to this day that every Sunday I lay out my clothes and I’m a suit and tie guy, so I leave all my calls every Sunday from Monday to Friday and I work weekends as well so it’s not that hard Emily at my gym clothes for every day of the week as well so I don’t have to think about it. I know it that’s sad and Donald ready it’s not that hard.

What’s your dad said. It’s a respect thing. I had the same thought in church the other day. People look like they’re going out to the garden to work rather than to church to worship God. I heard a statement once that you can’t go before the worldly king and queen without a gift and without being dressed up. Doesn’t God deserve this? Just like over grown 10 year olds on the stage

"Extremely demeaning" is an opinion I'm sure reflects what he was taught as a boy. I reject the whole underlying premise. Love JP but this is one piece of his advice that I laugh out loud at every time I hear. There are times to dress accordingly and f you need to do to make you feel better about yourself then go ahead but to use it a a gauge to measure others, or to think it's more than just one monkey showing off to the other monkeys is just humorous to me.

I've noticed how so many men my age dress like they're kids. All they need is a skateboard under their arm to complete the look. I've gone the opposite way in recent years. I don't wear suits but I buy good quality, correctly fitting clothes. It's actually cheaper to buy a minimalist capsule wardrobe containing quality clothes that will last decades than to keep buying cheap clothing that needs replacing every year or so. And don't get me started on tattoos!

This is subjective as hell. Fashion is soley based on personality and profession. Trump wears suits all the time and half the population hates him while others love him. Meanwhile Obama would always say that he hated wearing a suit 24/7. You should wear a suit if it genuinely empowers you and not for the expectations of others. I wore a suit and dress shirt for all my job interviews once out of highschool and never got a call back but the day I wore a sweater all of a sudden i had my first job.

Yea OK, Jordan Peterson dresses exactly like a kid from 1930. But bigger. Ten years olds back then were dressing with suites, his argument is weak. Plus dressing like he does is uncomfortable at most of the times and it is also a feminine trait...

I used to be a bouncer, at nicer night clubs. On a vacation in Thailand I bought 5 tailor made suits + xx shirts, ties and so on and started wearing at work. We usually had black windbreakers with "Security" the night club gave us, and the first night someone said "you cant work like that?"
Sure I can, I have my badge visible, complying with the law, nobody is going to mistake me for a customer... Within weeks I was promoted and had a pretty nice "career" working high end nightclubs for a few years. And my employer told me straight: Its because of the suit, its looks GREAT, and you wear it good. People love it.

If i need to wear a suit. Im in wrong place. If you wear a suit, i automatically think you work for someone or you are some representive worker. Suiting up takes time, ironing, keeping clean and no wrinkles. It takes time and its uncomfortabe. Time is money. Wearing a suit just feels oppressive. I live warm area next to ocean and wearing a suit is unconvinient

Maybe it is due to the part of the country that I'm from, but I always feel extremely out of place if I am more dressed up than everyone else. I try to be as dressed up as the "most dressed up" people somewhere, but never more. (If I were in a business casual work environment, I would wear a collared shirt/nice pants, but not a tie. And definitely not a suit. If it is a casual dress environment, I would wear a nice casual outfit, etc). The only times that I ever wear a suit are weddings and funerals. I like wearing suits and wish that I had more opportunities to wear one, but I would just look so out of place if I did. Honestly, wearing a suit most places would just cause people to assume that I am very autistic/neurodivergent or just very off in some way mentally. (Usually not a good thing when it comes to first impressions). Really the only guys who can get away with dressing formally in more casual environments are very old men, and even then they usually give off the "socially awkward academic" vibe. Just my two cents.

suits are too expensive to maintain. keep ironing and dry cleaning? who has the time vs. $2 to wash my t-shirts and sweatpants at the laundromat? it's not just money, the time too. not worth it unless your job demands it. I rather a 6 pack underneath than a suit with a potbelly.

So once it became acceptable it was absolutely pounced upon

My dad always dressed nice, even to go grocery shopping. One day he's shopping in Walmart North Idaho, wearing his usual dress shirt, sweater best, wool jacket and slacks. They clerk recognizes him and asks what kind of work he does. He said he's in real estate, she answers "you look like a professor". 90% of customers were wearing sweats, puffy vests, athletic shoes, messy hair, no make-up etc. My dad was 80, still working managing his office building but shopped at Walmart to save money. Everything in his closet he bought on sale at Macy's. Always fit, 32" waist and well dressed. Makes a huge difference

The more important lesson here is that you should take pride in your appearance and be proud of the clothes you wear. Fast fashion has screwed us in that way. I'm a carpenter, so obviously I won't be wearing a suit and tie to work, or when I get home in the evening. Investing in 1 nice, high quality, excellent fitting sweater that you are proud to wear is much better than buying 10 crappy, ill-fitting sweaters from walmart.
