Haha TikTok attention span that was hilarious and so true!
Ответить1200 ohms always on my BAE 1073s, always!
Ответить🔥
ОтветитьSuperb video and very well said done Kristian!
Ответитьwhat deal do you have with hat company ?
ОтветитьSuch an informative and useful video Kohle. Thanks for doing this one!
ОтветитьI use the 880 with my Sennheiser 421's on my toms.. I"m gonna mess with the impedance... also the 880 is a nice versatile unit.... thanks!
ОтветитьGreat explanation!
ОтветитьI used to hate the Sm57 until I got a neve style preamp. An Sm57 into a Neve style preamp at the 300ohm is now my starting point.
ОтветитьYou're not going to feel that difference on Twitter. Mostly everybody compensate it with the compressors, these days, plus low ΩHμ impedence and higher gain can sound old rather than modern, don't you?! I don't know. Namastè.
Ответитьbecause this is all linear behavior, it can be captured in an IR. seems like a fun new dimension to include in IRs involving dynamic/ribbon mics.
ОтветитьThank you!
ОтветитьNot surprised at all, have a few pre's with variable impedance, including my ISA MkI that I've had for years. It has the "110" mode that can be really cool for adding some lo-fi vibe to tracks but I'm not so in love with it on hi-gain stuff.
Might have sounded really good to blend the 57 or ribbonwith the condenser on the acoustic mix though and add a bit of grit to all the pretty sparkles.
Always inspiring my lord
ОтветитьMan this riff is very cool and nasty! Awesome video!
ОтветитьHow to know the impedance of my preamps?...I couldn't find it anywhere... isa 220 and art pro channel
ОтветитьA very awesome video sir. I'm super curious if the same applies for drums where the overheads would be better at a higher impedance and the kit at a lower. Especially with an active ribbon mic. Have you tried or does it even matter? Chug on 🤘🔥🧡🤘
ОтветитьDo old mics and new mics sound very different? For example, a 20 year old SM57 versus one fresh out of the box?
ОтветитьAlso found aea is producing ribbon preamps with incredibly high input impedance
ОтветитьGreat Video 🤘.
I have two GAP Pre73 with this option. Switch from 1200Ohm to 300 Ohm.
For me its very interesting how your cable management is, how your routings work.
And how we get Steinberg to bring out a new cc121 😅.
Yes,by the way....the impedance matching between Components in musical gear is the main part of coloring the sound of the gear together with filtering.I was wondering why they have to use so many
buffers in my console/amek hendrix/and finally the tube screamer is the perfect and simple answer...
the oposit of hifi.A🤟
Great video, kudos
ОтветитьI´m recording my drums through the ASP880. I use med to lo impedance all the time on d112 (bd), sm57 (Snare top and bottom) and e604 (toms). You get extra grid and it's easier to mix.
ОтветитьNice! 👍🏻☀️🌿✨
ОтветитьI use this feature a lot in my ISA One when I'm recording vocals thru a dynamic mike (modded sm57). Higher settings are brighter and more detailed, but lower settings compliment the guttural gurgle and compresses a bit.
I've also tried Audient on guitars with nice results! 🤘🍻🍃 Stay brooootal.
Often a preamp input impedance of at least 10 times the output impedance of a dynamic microphone is advised. The SM57 and SM7B are examples of mics working better with a lower impedances. That's why the SM7B ( 150 Ohms ) sounds best with the Empirical labs Mik-e with an input impedance of only 600 Ohms.
ОтветитьSo, I was getting less than results when I was recording OH on my drums. I was searching for a way to improve the incoming signal so, I purchased an ART MPII. I started recording and the sound I was hoping for did not happen. I read the instruction manual just to see if I missed something in the functions, or settings...low and behold, there was this Impedance section in the manual. After reading about the functionality, I started looking up the mics that I owned and finding out what the IMP was for each. I went in to the studio and started adjusting MPII so that the OH mics I was using had proper IMP....Wow! (The ART MPII actually has a KNOB that allows you to dial more or less) I discovered exactly what you have here today. It makes a real difference. You have to really pay attention and even record some A/B parts to compare like you have to hear the improvement. It is subtle but powerful! Great Video as always! Prost!
ОтветитьAmazing video - great to have a better understanding.
ОтветитьOne other comment about the ART....you mentioned the "range" of Impedance. The ART PRO MPII will allow you to dial in an impedance from as low as 150k all the way up to 3k. 600K is the 12 o'clock position. It is not the best preamp in the world but with a little tweaking, and some new tubes along the way, it has done a great job for me for over 15 years now. AND...It is an affordable option for any home studio.
ОтветитьIs there any ways to experiment with this if your interface/pre doesn't have these switches?
Ответитьvery important topic! thx for bringing it up. as you screamed "AUDIENT" sooo many times at me, may i say: check out se electronics DM2 TNT in line impendance preamp: goes from 50 Ohms to 10Mohm. Boy oh boy, did it draw the blanket from my cheap tbone ribbon mic, and the old vintage akg dynamics at the bottom of the mic drawer. . maybe try to snag it used (ca. 100) befor splashing out for a phancy new interface if you already got a decent one. needs phantom power, works well with my rme babyface and behringer flow mixer. perfect for field forest and beachrecording. also straight into zoomh4. and protects the ribbon mic from beeing fried if you forget phantom power on. cheers!
ОтветитьI have a focusrite twin track dual preamp i normally use it for vocals but it has an impedance knob i never mess to much with it or used it for guitar amps it just sits pretty on my desk hahaha
ОтветитьThe API. An old mentor of mine said to me years ago "e-guitars love transformers" ...Given this example, he sure was right. The API (as expected) slays the Audient IC amps..
Ответитьon SM57 loudness was an important factor, because once high impedance was made louder, the difference was not so prenounce
ОтветитьFun fact the old Shure 545SD Unidyne III had in it early manuals in the late 50s and early 60s that it is designed to be used with an impedance of 1:1 (250 ohms).
ОтветитьAs always, I find something new! Great video. But I still have a question. I use the preset on my sm57 which is directly connected to the mic so it looks a little longer than normal but has +20dB of linear gain added. Will this Magic impedance trick work in my case too?
Ответитьcan we appreciate that Shimmering ASMR-ish Solo Acoustic by Kohle himself??
ОтветитьDefinitely gonna have to try this next time I record guitars. I've always used the higher impedance thinking it was the best one and the lower would darken or muffle the tone. My main preamps are Golden Age 573s, I do have the ASP880 but it always ends up used for drum overheads and cymbal mics and the condensers don't change the tone so I don't bother with the switch. Gonna have to do some recording tests like you did here.
Ответить😢
ОтветитьCrazy difference on the high gain guitars! I was struggling to pick between the asp800 and asp880 unit for 8 extra channels and this made up my mind!
Great video, thanks!
"Technically correct ≠ Musically desirable" is a great statement
ОтветитьI have been seriously thinking about buying this 8-channel audience preamp since last year. (as alternatives I wanted this one or the Midas XL48, already discontinued) But this Audient 880, I think it is the best for less than a thousand euros. HOWEVER!, this model has been available since 2014. I am somewhat afraid of buying it and the next month seeing a new updated rack. Or worse yet, have it discontinued. This 880 is a wonderful rack. It has everything I need. pre super clean and AD switchable. I would have liked the PAD -20db button on all channels and not just 1 and 2. With this it would have been really perfect.
ОтветитьGreat video! I have a Neve 1073, and recently got the DM2. The DM2 gives a lot more options (compared to the 300/1200 options in the 1073).
I noticed the best results by increasing the impedance when using my AEA R92 and Shure SM7B.

Who's surpised by the results? 🙄
