Dark Souls II - What Happened?

I love dark souls 2, it was my first souls game, although i have to admit that some parts are frustrating as fck and feel unfair at times

Dark Souls 2 is most certainly the worst game in FromSofts line-up of games post Demons Souls, but! that still makes it well worth playing and better than most games out there
Im gonna also throw something out there, DS2 is still better than the second half of DS1
Note i am biased because i absolutely despise the second half of ds1, omg its so awful i usually quit my playthroughs after anor londo

The difference i noted between DS2 and its contemporary Souls Games is that they made the Bosses easier but getting to them harder

Hidetaka Miyazaki should absolutely be the only person who can lead the development of fromsoft new soulslikes and the series will die with him, don't @ me.

I wrote it almost a decade ago Love you all❤️

Im playing DS2 currently and can say that its not a bad game at all. Its actually very good

I did really enjoy Dark Souls 2. It has problems but I found it to be a very enjoyable journey. It sounds like the original vision was incredibly ambitious and I wonder what that could have been. I enjoyed how much the game didnt make sense, and I guess that is the result of the last minute repurposing of every asset made. The main thing that upset me was that TO THIS DAY we still dont have the impressive lighting that was shown to us in 2013. Why not patch it in? Why not release it to modders to finish up? Hopefully Flames of Old manages to achieve this, but it shouldnt have been up to someone else to recreate from scratch.

I almost skipped playing this game and going straight to DS3, I’m glad I played it. It’s a great RPG that just has some frustrating flaws

ds2 is better than elden ring imo theres a reason i uninstalled elden ring and kept ds2 lol (elden rings sfast spammy combat is too easy to counter compared to ds2s slow paced group fights)

If Tanimura was here from the start and the base game could have been more coherent and as good as the crows dlc, this game would a been a absolute banger

Nothing happened, its a perfect game and I will always continue to say its the best of the trilogy.

Does anyone have a source about how Dark Souls 2 was supposed to be more "open-ended"? I am trying to find more information about it but I am only finding this video and reddit posts without any cited sources.

Dark Souls II is better to me than Dark Souls I. Had an absolute horrible time with over 50% of Dark Souls I due to horrible boss designs/areas and runbacks. (Bed of Chaos, Gravelord Nito, Ceaseless Discharge, Pinwheel, Centipede Demon, Moonlight Butterfly etc. I could go on)
Dark Souls II also had some bad bosses for sure, but some of them you actually could make easier through EXPLORATION. A concept I wish they had kept in the franchise as it gives people a choice.
It's not a perfect came and I lament what could have been, but it's not nearly as bad as people say it is, or, Dark Souls I is not nearly as good as people think it is. Either one, Dark Souls II is a worthy sequel despite its differences, as it does some things worse, but it does a lot of things better than Dark Souls I.

Despite its flaws I still enjoyed DS2. Especially once the dlc/Scholar of the First Sin came out.

The graphics of this game are abysmal for a game that came out in 2014. It looks like fucking Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Game is awesome but if graphics were all that I took into consideration this game would get a -10/10.

Dark souls 2 might have got several things wrong. But it also got a lot of mechanics right which honestly should have been implemented in future games.

The lack of invincibility near a fog gate until a certain threshold time (where it one ups both Dark Souls 1 and 3), lack of invincibility while opening doors or pulling levers (looking at you ds3), and perhaps my personal favourite, the estus flask not completely healing you immediately but rather having a short delay.

Why is this delayed healing so great? Because if you have played ds or DS3, there is one scenario where the player takes a step back and has multiple estus flasks while being sure to tank a hit. It works perfectly as a move in the other 2 games but in DS2? Even if you drank 2 estuses, the boss for example can still kill you instantly because you haven't finished recovering.

This would force the player to truly learn to pick a safe time to heal rather than rely on tanking one hit. Ds2 even takes an even more non linear path than ds1 where you can choose to go for the ball above or below but Ds2, is more conditional.

You initially only have two paths (both of which lead to the same ultimate boss) you can go to but you can pretty easily stop on that path once you have what you need to unlock a new path.

So for example, you can immediately go back and pursue the Old Iron King Path as soon as you defeated the DragonRider and spoke to the Priestess or you can choose to engage with the lost sinner path through the Flexile Sentry.

You could even get the fragrant branch of yore as soon as possible (I dont know where you get it but hear me out) and pursue the Duke's Dear Freija path.

Hell, if you have enough health and souls you can literally buy the cat's ring in Majula and immediately go to the gutter on meeting a minimum threshold (as a bonus find the ladder guy).

Hell, while you need all 4 main boss souls (Lost sinner, freija, rotten and old iron king) in a traditional run, in a glitchless run and if you collect enough souls (you can theoretically do it without killing any other boss but let's say it's best if you kill someone else too), the only bosses you have to kill are:

1. The Last Giant
(You'll find the branch of yore in the gutter though you dont need to fight the rotten if you dont want to, you can just take it and come back)

(Shrine of winter unlocked with a 1m souls of total extraction)
3. Twin Dragonriders
4. Mirror Knight
5. Demon of Song
6. Velstadt
7. Guardian Dragon
8. The Giant Lord
9. Throne Watcher and Throne Defender
10. Nasshandra

It showed with the dlc that they could make it great if they had time because DS2 dlc is some of the best areas of all souls games.

It’s truly saddening how much potential this game had. Ideas are great, cinematics are the best out of all series and armor design. This could be revolutionary, a progress skip that could have skipped ds3 and er in terms of everything. And still after claiming to be a failure of the series, it’s still a solid 4/5 and a great game overall. New engine and lack of good shades really pulled down on what this game could become. Even graphically, the game is almost as good as ds3, it’s about shading, they enhanced graphics from e3 but removed the shading which resulted in disappointing visuals
But enough crying, it’s still a good game and more like a disabled genius that is ahead of it’s time but cannot do anything with his own knowledge. And you know, it caught the timing for my country, it is most people’s first dark souls and most of them are nostalgic of it

I would like to say Scholar also ruined DS2. Original DS2 is good. Not great, but enjoyable. There is just too many enemies in SOTFS.

I actually really like DS2. I know it's got problems, but I like how experimental and weird it gets.

What if dark souls 4 isn't actually a video game but a one way ticket to Japan where you are a Video game developer with no experience but have a one year deadline to completely remake a video game.

So they tried to make elden ring 10 years earlier. Glad they didn't ds2 is my baby and elden ring is awesome.

I mean DS2SOTFS is still my fav souls game, it taught me a lot about souls mechanics, upgrading, using consumables and much more. DS1 was my first souls game and then DS2SOTFS. I didn't know a lot while playing DS1. Playing DS1 again after DS2, I saw a lot of differences. Dragon bosses suck in DS2. Look at the Kalameet boss fight in DS1 DLC.
There are issues with DS2, still it is enjoyable. DS1 is still my fav soulsbourne game.

Fuck off, Miyuzaki is the one to design Souls games. Let other people do other IPs.
